History &Architecture Whilst The Oberoi Marrakesh was only opened in 2019, it is so wonderfully executed, so true and respectful to Moroccan heritage, one could be forgiven for thinking it was centuries old, just incredibly well conserved. There is so much detail and my eyes trace the intricate calligraphic patterns that adorn a hand-carved cedar door or gaze into the geometric patterns that decorate floors, walls and ceilings. Sipping mint tea in a shaded nook as the call to prayer echoes across the olive groves, it’s such a pleasure to know the madness of the city centre is so close, yet so far. The Oberoi’s architectural prowess is a testament to the resort’s commitment to preserving and celebrating Morocco’s illustrious cultural legacy. The property’s centrepiece—a stunning courtyard modelled after the renowned Medersa Ben Youssef—is a symphony of intricate tilework, ornately carved wood, and gleaming Carrara marble. It’s as if you’ve been transported back in time to the height of the Alaouite sultanate, yet with all the creature comforts of the 21 st century. Beyond this magnificent central quadrangle, The Oberoi’s low-slung villas and suites merge into the olive grove-dotted landscape, their unassuming terracotta façades belying the opulent interiors within. The property used to be an actual olive farm and there are acres of grounds still left as a pristine, grove. This harmonious marriage of vernacular architecture and carefully cultivated nature sets the stage for a stay that is equal parts luxurious and immersive, transporting guests to a realm where the past and present converge in perfect harmony. Arrival Experience Indeed, it is this remarkable duality—this ability to evoke the enchantments of a bygone era while providing the comforts and refinements of the present day—that truly sets The Oberoi apart. The grand entrance portal gives way to a soothing ambiance and I was welcomed by the Guest Relations Manager and also the General Manager. After pleasant introductions I was shown to a magnificent villa. This warm, personalised greeting sets the tone for a stay where every need is anticipated and catered to with genuine enthusiasm. Throughout their time at The Oberoi, guests are consistently treated like royalty by the resort’s 300-strong staff. The attention to detail is impeccable, from the thoughtful welcome treats, amenities and handwritten notes from the housekeeping team through to the custom wellness programmes and ensuring the villa is meticulously refreshed twice daily. The hotel’s multilingual team delivers a standard of service that is flawless. Simply Abu Dhabi | 195
