History & Architecture Shaped by ten centuries of history, La Sultana breathes new life into the legendary past. The pale pink Riad Scheherazade drips with intricate stucco work and fine zellij tilework, evoking the grandeur of the Saadian era. Across the lush courtyard gardens, the brick-lined Riad Almohad echoes the royal granaries of the Almohad dynasty. Jewel-toned Riad Saadia showcases the ornate carved cedarwood that is a hallmark of Moroccan craftsmanship, while the all-white Riad Sabaa is a vision of serene minimalism. Throughout the hotel, a curated collection of Moroccan and African artworks and antiques creates an exotic, layered ambiance. Arrival Experience I was welcomed by the hotel’s impeccably dressed staff, who throughout my stay were always available to assist, but most notably of all, were genuinely happy to chat, interested, and kind-hearted. I was given a mobile phone so that I could WhatsApp my personal butler at any time. I didn’t think I’d need it but it proved to be a last-minute saviour when I realised, rather late, that it was necessary to have printed boarding passes for my flight. A quick message, and the passes were printed and waiting for me at reception along with a smile. After check-in I was led through the peaceful scented corridor and onto a lush, picturesque courtyard with a sun-dappled central pool and dining tables neatly occupying the surrounding space. There are multiple pools scattered throughout the hotel, including a small splash pool in Riad Bahia, a spa pool, and another compact pool on the rooftop. My suite was like an apartment, and after exploring that, it was a real joy to wander around the hotel admiring all the different décor styles, artworks and ornaments. Guest Rooms The 28 guest rooms and suites at La Sultana are each uniquely configured and decorated, offering a range of categories from Prestige Deluxe to the expansive Exclusive Suite. Rich, textured fabrics, bold colours, and decorative details create an atmosphere of opulence. Generous swagged curtains, stained-glass windows, and brass lanterns cast dazzling shadows across the comfortable king- sized beds. The bathrooms are a study in luxury, with arched ceilings, columns, and high-sheen marble finishes complementing the brass basins. My suite was enormous, with a toilet, extravagant bathroom with a deep sunken jacuzzi, shower, and posh amenities. The sitting room led onto a balcony overlooking the pool, and from the office space, with its beautiful wooden desk, there was a second balcony. The bedroom itself was incredibly comfortable, with a huge bed swimming in cushions. Finally, the walk in wardrobe revealed a host of treats; such as tote bags, panama hats and fluffy gowns and slippers. Simply Abu Dhabi | 203
