History &Architecture T he Cotton House Hotel, part of the Autograph Collection, occupies the former headquarters of the Cotton Textile Foundation, a 19th-century neoclassical landmark that stands as a testament to Barcelona’s mercantile heritage. The building’s transformation into a luxury hotel in 2015 was overseen by renowned interior designer Lázaro Rosa- Violán, who masterfully preserved original elements such as the intricate parquet floors, ornate boiserie ceilings and a grand spiral staircase that seems to float, as it is not supported by the walls or the floor below, but rather suspended via a metal framework. Added in 1957 and celebrated for its architectural ingenuity, this central feature is visually impactful with its distinctive glass globe lights and black metalwork, and it creates a sense of movement that contrasts beautifully with the building’s classical proportions. Also, it makes you avoid taking the lift, so you can frequently admire it and be healthy at the same time. The interior of Cotton House feels both historic and contemporary, with a design narrative that pays homage to the city’s textile legacy. The cotton motif is woven throughout the property, from the emblem on the stationary to subtle decorative touches in the guest rooms and public spaces, reinforcing the hotel’s unique identity. The Cotton House’s architecture is experiential, as the interplay of natural light, rich materials, and thoughtful design creates an atmosphere of understated luxury, where history is ever-present but never overwhelming. The hotel’s public areas, including the elegant library and lush green terrace, invite guests to linger and savour the building’s storied past. Arrival Experience Arrival at the Cotton House Hotel is a study in discreet sophistication. Guests enter through two enormous antique wooden doors into a spacious lobby, with the reception desk to the left and and inviting lounge to the right, where guests can enjoy a welcome drink of ice cold lemon water or a glass of champagne, while the check-in is swiftly completed. The staff are notably young, mainly in twenties age range, which is unusual yet refreshing. They show a keen sense to execute the art of hospitality well. The porter Mikhail brings my luggage and offers a brief orientation of the hotel’s history and amenities and talks me through the details of my room. The overall ambiance is relaxed yet refined, setting the stage for a stay that feels both exclusive and inviting. The hotel’s location in the upscale Eixample district places guests within easy reach of Barcelona’s cultural and culinary highlights, while the building’s tranquil interiors provide a welcome escape from the city’s energy.
