A Historical Hotel Mandarin Oriental, Tokyo, opened in December 2005, marking the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group’s debut in Japan. The hotel is situated in the Nihombashi district, Tokyo’s historic commercial heart, which has long been a vital centre of business, culture, and commerce in Japan. Nihombashi’s history dates back to the Edo period (1603–1868), when it became the starting point of the five major roads that connected Japan’s provinces to the capital, Edo (now Tokyo). The area flourished as a commercial hub, filled with merchants, artisans, traditional shops and restaurants. Mandarin Oriental, Tokyo was built within the Nihombashi Mitsui Tower, a modern skyscraper that rises 38 storeys above the city. The building itself stands on a historically significant site—once home to the original headquarters of Mitsui, one of Japan’s most powerful business conglomerates and property of the Mitsui family, one of Japan’s oldest and most influential merchant families. The current Nihombashi Mitsui Tower, home to Mandarin Oriental, Tokyo, stands adjacent to the historic Mitsui Main Building, which was completed in 1929 and designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan. The Mitsui Main Building itself is an architectural gem, designed in the Beaux-Arts style by the American architectural firm Trowbridge & Livingston. This historical structure remains a reminder of Nihombashi’s central role in Japan’s modernization and commercial success. Simply Abu Dhabi | 69
