It’s impossible to speak about the Jacksons now without thinking of the tragic death of Michael, who as a solo performer became the biggest star of all the brothers, before he passed away in 2009. However, that sad event has had a silver lining, as it has brought the fabulous group together once more. The Jacksons came to AbuDhabi as part of their superbUnity Tour – the first time the four have performed together since their Victory album in 1984. The Unity Tour was conceived both to pay homage to the group’s history and as a tribute to their late brother. We knewwe were in for a treat: The tour had already received rave reviews in locations such as New York City, Los Angeles, Rotterdam and Tokyo. Such a sterling pedigree had really whetted our appetite for a fun night of fine music. And needless to say, the foursome did not disappoint. From the very moment they stepped onto the stage, the Jacksons captivated us with their verve and skill. They have clearly lost none of their magic, and we could tell howmuch they relished performing their classic hits and dance moves. One of the best moments for us was a superb medley that brought together four amazing songs: I Want You Back, ABC, The Love You Save, and Never Can Say Goodbye. It was a real pleasure to see the group so enjoying themselves – and this is something that has been born by their public statements. At the time the tour was announced, Jermaine Jackson said: "I am so happy and excited to perform again onstage with my brothers. I can't wait to sing all the songs that were somuch a part of all of our lives. We are ready and committed to keep the family's legacy alive and performonce againwith the highest level of excellence, creativity and, most of all, integrity". Of course, there was always going to be a poignant side to this tour as well, and it was profoundly touching to watch the group perform some of their late brother’s solo songs. It was a sad moment when Jermaine sang Gone Too Soon, accompanied by video footage of Michael – but it was so heart-warming, too, to sense the emotion felt by every person in the room. Moments like this are beautiful, and they are even better when shared. We had come to this concert with some of our best friends from India: Prashant Kumar from Delhi, and Aisha Gupta fromMumbai. Both had flown in by private jet, accompanied by private security. Prashant said that he thought the blend of classic Jacksons hits and renditions of Michael’s solo songs had hit just the right balance. “The show encompassed a huge range of emotions and really showed us what the group can do,” he said. Aisha was incredibly impressed by the dance moves. “Jermaine is such a skilful performer,” she enthused. The Jacksons’ skill and importance to music is undeniable to anyone who has seen them perform. They were formally inducted into the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame in 1997 – the youngest group ever to receive that honor. They have performed for the Queen of England three times as well as for Presidents, dignitaries and Heads of State across the globe. Abu Dhabi has a long tradition of hosting iconic performers, including the Jacksons’ sister Janet, who came here inOctober 2011. Their scintillating performance was among the best we have seen here. It demonstrated powerfully to us that, despite the passing of years and the loss of Michael, the group is still at the peak of its powers. Our night was both deeplymoving and hugely enjoyable. What a privilege to have been able to see this historic act in this wonderful Emirate. It is a moment we will cherish for a long time. 7 7 S I M P LY A B U DH A B I
