Abu Dhabi Unveils Transformative Sports Championship Spanning 350 Schools and 19 Disciplines

A landmark initiative from the Department of Education and Knowledge brings structured competitive sport to students across the emirate, fostering character development, athletic excellence and pathways to elite achievement.

The Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge has launched the Abu Dhabi Sports Championship for Schools, a comprehensive competitive framework developed in partnership with the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi and Abu Dhabi Sports Council. The initiative represents a transformative approach to school sport, offering more than 350 schools across the emirate opportunities to participate in meaningful competition throughout the academic year.

The championship encompasses 19 sporting disciplines and extends across Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and Al Dhafra, creating a broad platform for student participation designed to build confidence, teamwork and resilience whilst encouraging a lasting passion for athletic pursuit. His Excellency Mohamed Taj Eddine Ahmed Alqadi, Chairman of the Department of Education and Knowledge – Abu Dhabi, articulated the vision: “We want every student to have the opportunity to experience sport as a meaningful part of school life – to be active, compete, discover their potential and develop a passion that can stay with them for years to come.”

Two Complementary Competition Models

The championship operates through two distinct formats tailored to different age groups and sporting disciplines. The Elite League provides season-long weekly competition for U17 and U19 student athletes across seven sports: football, basketball, volleyball, padel, athletics, jiu-jitsu and swimming. The district-based model connects neighbouring schools through regular local fixtures, fostering community support around student athletes whilst creating sustained opportunities for improvement and school representation.

The Tournament Format serves students from U9 through U19, featuring inter-school competitions across the school year with qualifying rounds and finals. This format encompasses rugby and twelve individual sports including archery, badminton, chess, cycling, fencing, judo, Obstacle Course Racing, laser run, table tennis, taekwondo and wrestling. For U11 to U15 students, tournament competition additionally includes football, basketball, volleyball, athletics, jiu-jitsu and swimming.

Character Development Through Sport

Every fixture reinforces core championship values of integrity, humility, respect and discipline, creating an environment in which sportsmanship, participation and character development hold equal weight alongside performance. Qualified and trained coaches across all sports provide effective guidance and support, ensuring students develop not only athletic skills but also the personal qualities that extend far beyond the playing field.

His Excellency Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, emphasised the broader significance: “Sport has incredible potential to bring people together in meaningful ways, and this new championship creates an important platform for students, schools and families across Abu Dhabi to share in that experience.”

Inclusive Participation and Talent Development

The championship includes Unified Leagues in collaboration with Special Olympics UAE, ensuring Students of Determination participate in an inclusive competitive environment that supports confidence, teamwork and personal growth. A comprehensive rewards and recognition programme acknowledges outstanding schools, student athletes, teachers and coaches through talent scholarships, infrastructure funding, and professional development opportunities.

For exceptional athletes identified throughout the season, the championship represents the beginning of an advanced development trajectory. High-performing students may be selected for the All-Star Program, an elite initiative connecting Abu Dhabi’s most talented school athletes with professional coaching, regional and international competition opportunities, and clear pathways towards clubs, academies and professional sport.

His Excellency Aref Hamad Al Awani, Secretary General of Abu Dhabi Sports Council, highlighted the long-term strategic importance: “The Abu Dhabi Sports Championship for Schools represents a key pillar in our efforts to develop school sports, expand participation, and identify and nurture promising talent. We firmly believe that schools are the starting point for building a generation of athletes capable of competing and excelling.”

Parents seeking further information about their child’s participation should contact their school’s sports department to understand available sports, eligibility requirements and selection dates. Comprehensive details are available at sportscup.adek.ae.
