Dubai’s World Trade Centre Roundabout Transformed: Final Bridge Opens This Week

Dubai's World Trade Centre Roundabout Transformed: Final Bridge Opens This Week

The Roads and Transport Authority completes a sweeping infrastructure project that reimagines one of the emirate's most critical intersections, reducing travel times from minutes to seconds and serving half a million daily users.

A transformative moment arrives this Friday for Dubai’s urban transport network. The Roads and Transport Authority will open the final bridge of the World Trade Centre Roundabout Development Project on 30th October 2026, marking the completion of an ambitious infrastructure undertaking that reshapes one of the emirate’s most vital intersections.

The new 1,000 metre, two-lane bridge will carry approximately 3,000 vehicles per hour, connecting Al Majlis Street to 2nd December Street. The scale of improvement is striking: journeys that once required six minutes will now take just one. This elegant solving of urban congestion reflects a broader commitment to seamless connectivity across Dubai’s most consequential economic zones.

The completed project encompasses five bridges spanning 5,000 metres in combined length, engineered at a cost exceeding AED696 million. The former roundabout has been transformed into an at-grade intersection, fundamentally altering traffic patterns across Sheikh Zayed Road. Average delay at the intersection falls from twelve minutes to ninety seconds, a precision recalibration of one of the city’s critical nodes.

Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA, notes that the project strengthens connectivity between the emirate’s leading economic and commercial centres. The scheme serves Dubai World Trade Centre, the Dubai International Financial Centre, and surrounding communities including Zaabel, Al Satwa, Al Karama, Al Jafiliya and Al Mankhool, benefiting more than 500,000 residents and visitors daily.

The architecture of the solution is sophisticated: a second-level bridge extends towards Deira, whilst two bridges link Sheikh Rashid Street with 2nd December Street, and another pair connects Al Majlis Street with 2nd December Street. This layered approach creates free-flowing traffic in multiple directions, eliminating the bottlenecks that once characterised this intersection.

As Mattar Al Tayer explains, this project works in concert with the Al Mustaqbal Street Development Project, scheduled for completion in 2027. That scheme will introduce bridges and tunnels spanning 1,500 metres combined, expanding the street to four lanes in each direction and increasing its capacity by thirty-three percent. Together, these initiatives represent a coordinated approach to unlocking Dubai’s transport infrastructure.

The World Trade Centre Roundabout Development Project stands as evidence of how thoughtful urban planning can enhance both efficiency and quality of life. As the emirate continues its economic expansion, particularly within its flourishing events and exhibitions economy, seamless connectivity becomes ever more essential to sustaining growth and facilitating the movement of goods, capital and people through the city.

What it means for Abu Dhabi

Dubai’s transport infrastructure investments demonstrate the broader UAE commitment to urban excellence and regional connectivity. The elimination of congestion points across such prominent commercial and financial districts strengthens the entire emirate’s appeal as a place to conduct business, invest and live. Enhanced traffic flow serves residents and visitors alike, whilst supporting the economic vitality of zones that anchor the nation’s standing as a global business hub.

For Abu Dhabi itself, Dubai’s continued focus on seamless urban mobility sets a competitive standard that elevates expectations across the UAE. The project’s completion reinforces the emirate’s position as a leader in infrastructure innovation and urban planning, contributing to the interconnected prosperity that benefits the entire federation.
