Dubai’s Higher Education Sector Gains Momentum Through Strategic Industry Collaboration

Dubai's Higher Education Sector Gains Momentum Through Strategic Industry Collaboration

Senior leaders from academia, government and business convene to chart the emirate's course as a global centre of learning, aligning talent development with evolving economic needs.

The Knowledge Assembly brought together influential figures from Dubai’s educational and commercial spheres to examine how the emirate’s universities and vocational institutions might deepen their engagement with industry and strengthen their standing on the international stage. Held at Dubai Knowledge Park and organised by Dubai International Academic City and Dubai Knowledge Park in partnership with the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA), the event reflected a broader commitment to positioning Dubai as a destination of distinction for higher learning, in line with the Dubai Economic Agenda (D33) and the Education 33 (E33) Strategy.

The day’s focal discussion, titled “From Destination to Distinction: Building Dubai’s Global Academic Standing”, brought together senior officials from KHDA, the Department of Economy and Tourism, the University of Wollongong in Dubai, and QS Quacquarelli Symonds to explore how educational institutions might enhance their competitive edge and international reputation. The conversation centred on the symbiotic relationship between academia and industry: how universities develop talent responsive to market needs, and how businesses benefit from access to graduates equipped with skills aligned to current and emerging sectors.

Dr. Saeed Mubarak Kharbash, Chief Executive Officer of Policies, Research and Programmes at KHDA, underscored the significance of this alignment. “Dubai’s higher education sector plays a vital role in advancing the objectives of the Education 33 Strategy and the Dubai Economic Agenda D33 by developing talent, fostering innovation and strengthening the emirate’s global competitiveness,” he remarked. He emphasised that translating this vision into reality demands sustained collaboration between government, academia and industry, ensuring that higher education institutions remain attuned to the changing expectations of learners, employers and the labour market itself. “Platforms such as The Knowledge Assembly are important in strengthening these connections and helping shape a future-ready higher education ecosystem,” he added.

Marwan Abdulaziz Janahi, Senior Vice President of Dubai International Academic City and Dubai Knowledge Park at TECOM Group, viewed the assembly as a crucible for dialogue and strategic thinking. “The Knowledge Assembly provides a strategic platform that brings together decision-makers, higher education institutions, and the business community to strengthen collaboration and foster dialogue, contributing to the sector’s continued growth and reinforcing Dubai’s position as a global pioneering hub for higher education and lifelong learning.”

A significant development emerged from the proceedings: Dubai International Academic City and Dubai Knowledge Park announced a strategic partnership with Together We Empower (+twe), an in5 start-up that leverages artificial intelligence to connect students with career pathways. The collaboration will enable learners from universities and vocational institutions to access internship opportunities, employment prospects and career readiness resources through the +twe platform, effectively narrowing the gap between classroom learning and professional practice.

The assembly also highlighted progress on Dubai’s Higher Education Leadership Network (HELN), a body unveiled at the inaugural Knowledge Assembly the previous year. The founding committee comprises thirteen leaders drawn from government, technology, logistics, healthcare, aviation and higher education itself, tasked with forging stronger bonds between academic institutions and industry while ensuring that talent development aligns with the evolving demands of the labour market.

What it means for Abu Dhabi

While hosted in Dubai, this convening signals an important development across the Emirates: the recognition that higher education systems must evolve in tandem with economic transformation and labour market dynamics. The emphasis on collaboration between universities and industry, underpinned by strategic partnerships and digital platforms, reflects principles increasingly central to the UAE’s broader vision for knowledge economy development. The integration of AI-powered career tools and the formulation of cross-sector leadership networks demonstrate how the Emirates are leveraging innovation to bridge the perennial gap between academic preparation and professional readiness.

The Knowledge Assembly’s focus on global academic standing and international competitiveness also speaks to a regional imperative: as the UAE positions itself within global innovation and talent ecosystems, its educational institutions must earn recognition not simply as regional providers but as internationally credible centres of learning. The assembly’s engagement with QS Quacquarelli Symonds, a leading global rankings and intelligence authority, reflects this international dimension, suggesting that emirate-wide educational development increasingly forms part of a coordinated national strategy.
