Dubai Food Bank and Community Authority Unite to Transform Wedding Surplus Into Community Care

Dubai Food Bank and Community Authority Unite to Transform Wedding Surplus Into Community Care

A landmark partnership channels surplus food from celebrations into the hands of those in need, embedding sustainability and generosity into the fabric of Dubai's social fabric.

Weddings are occasions of abundance, yet the celebration of union often leaves a trail of unused food. Now, through a carefully considered agreement between the UAE Food Bank and Dubai’s Community Development Authority, that surplus has found a purposeful second life. The partnership, formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding, transforms the ‘Dubai Weddings’ initiative into a conduit for both social care and sustainable resource management.

The arrangement establishes a systematic framework for identifying, collecting and redistributing surplus food from weddings and events. Under strict food safety protocols, donations deemed suitable for consumption flow to eligible beneficiaries across the emirate. This is not merely about clearing plates; it is about honouring the principle that nourishment should reach those who need it, while reducing the waste that accompanies celebration.

Dr. Ahmed Al Hashemi, CEO of the Social Regulation and Services Sector at the Community Development Authority in Dubai, describes the initiative as an extension of the ‘Dubai Weddings’ scheme’s deeper purpose. ‘By ensuring that surplus food from weddings and events is safely recovered and redistributed to those in need, we are creating additional opportunities for giving while encouraging responsible consumption and the efficient use of resources,’ he explained.

The partnership carries resonance beyond logistics. It reflects the values that underpin the Dubai Social Agenda 33: community participation, social cohesion and collective responsibility. Manal Obaid bin Yaroof, Head of the Executive Team of the UAE Food Bank, emphasises the humanitarian dimension. ‘This agreement also supports our wider humanitarian and charitable mission by promoting awareness of food preservation, encouraging volunteer participation, and strengthening cooperation with other government entities,’ she noted.

The framework encompasses more than redistribution. Joint awareness campaigns and community programmes will encourage food preservation and promote sustainable consumption habits. Volunteers will participate in collection, transportation and management activities, deepening community engagement with the principles of resourcefulness and care.

The initiative aligns with the UAE’s broader commitment to food security. The country targets a 50 per cent reduction in food loss and waste by 2030, addressing vulnerabilities across production, transport, retail and household consumption. The UAE has also convened high-level dialogue on building resilient global food and water systems, recognising that supply chain resilience depends on minimising waste at every stage.

What it means for Abu Dhabi

This partnership demonstrates how social responsibility and resource efficiency can be woven into the fabric of community life. For Abu Dhabi, the model offers insight into systemic approaches to food security and humanitarian care. As the national targets for waste reduction take shape, initiatives that transform surplus into support systems strengthen the emirate’s capacity to build resilience across its own food ecosystem.

The collaboration also underscores the value of coordination between government entities and civil organisations in achieving social outcomes. Dubai’s family support initiatives, including the Dubai Weddings scheme, have reached nearly half of the emirate’s nuptials, demonstrating how targeted programmes can scale impact. Abu Dhabi’s own commitment to sustainable development benefits from such proven models of partnership and purpose-driven innovation.
