Al Ain Prepares for World Junior Chess Championship as Global Stage Comes to the Emirates

Al Ain Prepares for World Junior Chess Championship as Global Stage Comes to the Emirates

The emirate will host the world's finest young chess talents this November, reinforcing the UAE's position as a premier destination for international sporting excellence and youth development.

The garden city of Al Ain is set to welcome the fourth edition of the World Junior Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships, a tournament that brings together the most promising young minds in chess from across the globe. Between 1 and 7 November, 150 players under the age of twenty, representing forty countries and competing in both Open and Girls’ sections, will converge on the emirate to compete at the highest junior level.

Under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Nahyan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, the championship reflects the UAE’s unwavering commitment to nurturing international sporting talent and cementing its reputation as a sophisticated host of world-class events. The organising committee, led by Sheikh Sultan bin Khalifa bin Sultan bin Shakhboot Al Nahyan, President of the Asian Chess Federation and Chairman of Al Ain Chess and Mind Games Club, has significantly elevated the tournament’s prize fund to three times that of the previous edition, whilst introducing special accolades for the best Arab competitors in both rapid and blitz formats.

The timing is particularly resonant, as Al Ain holds the distinction of being named Arab Tourism Capital for 2026, a designation that the championship celebrates through its thoughtful additions to the competitive format. The arrangements reflect a broader strategic vision: as the UAE continues to demonstrate its strength in hosting international sporting competitions, chess holds a particular significance for youth development and intellectual excellence.

Dr Ismail Al Khoori, President of the UAE Chess Federation, emphasised that hosting this event represents a pivotal moment in advancing the nation’s sporting ambitions. He noted that the championship aligns seamlessly with the objectives of the Sports Strategy 2030, positioning the Emirates as an indispensable destination for major international tournaments held to the highest organisational standards. Hisham Al Taher, Chief Executive of Al Ain Chess and Mind Games Club, reflected on how the UAE’s proven track record, evidenced by previous editions held in Italy, Uzbekistan and Peru, demonstrates the international confidence placed in Emirati institutions.

For the UAE’s young players, the tournament represents an unparalleled opportunity to test themselves against elite international competitors, an experience that will sharpen their tactical prowess and broaden their understanding of the game’s complexities. The championship also underscores Al Ain’s transformation into a prominent destination on the international chess map, a journey marked by consistent investment in both infrastructure and human capital.

Looking forward, the championship serves as a stepping stone toward an even grander vision. The organising committee has expressed its ambition to host the Chess Olympiad in 2028, an event that would place the UAE at the very heart of the global chess community and further elevate its standing as a nation that celebrates intellectual pursuit and competitive excellence.

What it means for Abu Dhabi

The championship represents a significant achievement for Abu Dhabi’s broader sporting and cultural aspirations. By hosting such a prestigious international event, the emirate reinforces its position as a global centre for excellence, attracting young talent and their supporters from around the world whilst showcasing Emirati hospitality and organisational prowess to an international audience of chess enthusiasts, families and media.

For the local chess community and Abu Dhabi’s young players, the tournament offers an invaluable platform for development and exposure to world-class competition. It also contributes to the realisation of the Sports Strategy 2030, which seeks to position the UAE as a leading destination for major international sporting events and to foster a culture of athletic and intellectual achievement across the nation.
