Dubai Culture Welcomes Thai Literary Treasures to Enrich Public Libraries

A curated gift of Thai publications marks the first joint book donation between Dubai and Thailand, deepening cultural exchange and reinforcing the emirate's role as a global centre for intercultural dialogue

The shelves of Umm Suqeim Public Library have recently welcomed a thoughtful collection of Thai publications, offered by the Royal Thai Consulate-General in Dubai. This gesture, presented at a private ceremony in late October, represents far more than a simple transfer of books; it embodies a deliberate effort to weave the cultural narratives of Thailand into the intellectual fabric of Dubai’s public spaces.

Some 32 English-language publications have been carefully selected to traverse the breadth of Thai civilisation. The collection spans Thai culture, heritage, history, arts, tourism, cuisine and literature, each volume chosen to offer visitors genuine insight into the Kingdom’s rich traditions and contemporary expressions. Chakri Srichawana, Consul-General of the Kingdom of Thailand in Dubai, joined representatives from the Royal Thai Consulate-General and the Thailand Foundation at the ceremony, alongside officials from Dubai Culture’s Public Libraries Department and International Relations and Cultural Diplomacy Department.

This inaugural collaboration reflects a deeper commitment to knowledge exchange between the United Arab Emirates and Thailand. Abdulrahman Kalbat, Acting Director of the Public Libraries Department, underscored the initiative’s alignment with Dubai’s Cultural Strategy, emphasising how such partnerships reinforce the emirate’s ambition as a global reference for culture and a driver of the creative economy. The books will become accessible to the public once the library’s classification and cataloguing processes are complete, ensuring they integrate seamlessly into the collection.

The donation resonates with Dubai Culture’s broader mission of making culture accessible to all whilst strengthening international partnerships. As the Authority has demonstrated through its pioneering Global Fellowship and ongoing international engagements with creative practitioners worldwide, these efforts to foster cultural connections extend far beyond single transactions. They represent a philosophy that libraries and cultural institutions serve as vital spaces for learning, creativity and intercultural understanding.

What it means for Abu Dhabi

The strengthening of cultural ties between the United Arab Emirates and Thailand underscores the nation’s wider commitment to positioning itself as a bridge between civilisations. By enriching its public collections with carefully curated international perspectives, Dubai demonstrates how the Emirates values knowledge exchange as a tool for deepening global relationships and understanding.

For the residents and visitors of Abu Dhabi, such initiatives ripple outward as part of the broader Emirati approach to cultural diplomacy and inclusion. When libraries in neighbouring emirates receive international collections, they reinforce a shared vision of the UAE as an open, intellectually generous society where diverse voices and traditions find their place alongside one another.
