Dubai convenes global maritime leaders as industry navigates geopolitical uncertainty

Over 250 senior shipping executives will gather in Dubai next month for an inaugural summit examining resilience, innovation and trade flows in a rapidly shifting global landscape

When the world’s major shipping lines, port operators and regulators gather in Dubai on 12 November, they will do so at a moment of profound consequence for international maritime commerce. The inaugural Seatrade Maritime UAE Summit, conceived under the theme Navigating the Future: The UAE and the New Era of Global Maritime Leadership, arrives at a time when geopolitical disruption has reshaped trade patterns and placed operational resilience at the forefront of industry conversation.

Held in partnership with DP World, the summit will convene more than 250 senior maritime stakeholders who are actively shaping the next chapter of global shipping. The agenda reflects three interlocking concerns: the evolution of global trade flows, particularly in decarbonisation and digitalisation; the mechanisms by which the industry has maintained continuity through recent regional upheaval; and the practical innovations driving measurable progress across maritime operations.

The event’s significance is underscored by the strategic position of the UAE itself. As a crossroads connecting East-West trade routes, the Emirates sit at the confluence of Asian, European and African markets, supported by world-class port infrastructure, advanced logistics networks and sustained investment in maritime innovation. As reported in our coverage of Dubai Maritime City’s recent expansion, the region’s maritime sector continues to experience robust growth, with ship repair and marine manufacturing emerging as leading commercial segments.

A cornerstone of the summit will be the launch of the Menon Economics and DNV Leading Maritime Cities report, offering fresh analytical insight into the competitiveness and performance of maritime centres worldwide. The timing reflects Dubai’s broader evolution as a convening centre for global industry dialogue, investment and innovation.

Abdulla Bin Damithan, Chairman of the Ports, Customs and Free Zone Corporation, emphasised that Dubai’s maritime strength extends beyond its geographical position or infrastructure alone. “It lies in our ability to connect markets, align institutions and work across borders to keep trade moving,” he observed, pointing to the coordinated response required when regional shipping routes faced disruption this year. The challenges confronting global maritime trade, he noted, demand the kind of cross-border cooperation that Dubai has long championed.

Ahmad Yousef Al-Hassan, Chief Executive and Managing Director of DP World GCC, highlighted the connection between resilience and long-term infrastructure investment. “For cargo owners, shipping lines and investors, the lesson is that resilience is built through connected infrastructure, collaboration and the ability to adapt quickly,” he said, pointing to the region’s response when supply chains came under pressure.

The summit’s programme will feature keynote addresses and panel discussions involving senior representatives from DP World, DNV, Maersk, Tristar, Oldendorff, Emirates Shipping Line and other industry-leading organisations, providing a forum for the practical exchange of insight and the strengthening of partnerships across the sector.

What it means for Abu Dhabi

The summit recognises the UAE’s central role in global maritime infrastructure and its capacity to serve as a platform for industry leadership during a period of significant transition. By anchoring discussions around global trade flows, decarbonisation and operational innovation, the summit positions the Emirates as essential to the future direction of international shipping, particularly as trade patterns continue to shift and regional cooperation becomes increasingly vital.

For Abu Dhabi and the broader UAE, the event reinforces the strategic importance of maritime commerce to economic prosperity and regional stability. The emphasis on resilience and coordinated action reflects lessons learned from recent disruptions and signals the commitment of local institutions and global partners to sustaining the flow of international trade through a period of geopolitical complexity.
