Imperial College London and RIT Dubai forge partnership to shape the future of digital healthcare

Imperial College London and RIT Dubai forge partnership to shape the future of digital healthcare

A new collaboration between two leading institutions will equip healthcare professionals across Abu Dhabi with the data and technology skills essential to modern clinical practice, bridging the gap between academic learning and operational reality.

The integration of data and digital tools into healthcare is no longer a future prospect but an immediate necessity, reshaping how clinicians work and how institutions deliver care. Two prominent educational and healthcare organisations have recognised this moment and moved to address it through a formal partnership designed to strengthen professional capability across the Emirates.

Imperial College London Diabetes & Endocrine Centre, part of M42, and Rochester Institute of Technology Dubai have signed a Memorandum of Understanding that positions healthcare professionals to develop the competencies their roles increasingly demand. The collaboration responds to a clear imperative: as technology becomes more embedded in clinical practice, the workforce must evolve in step.

The partnership’s first initiative is a Credit-Bearing Micro-Credential in Health Informatics, accredited by the UAE Ministry of Education. This 12-credit programme draws its curriculum from the operational and technology challenges that healthcare teams encounter daily, allowing participants to apply their learning directly to issues relevant to their own work. The approach transforms abstract learning into practical knowledge, grounded in the realities clinicians face.

The structure of the collaboration reflects a broader principle: that academic institutions and healthcare organisations are strongest when they bring their distinct strengths into alignment. ICLDEC contributes insight into clinical, operational and technology needs, whilst RIT Dubai contributes academic expertise, learning resources and facilities. This reciprocal arrangement extends beyond the health informatics programme. Student projects at RIT Dubai may draw on real healthcare challenges identified by ICLDEC, giving students exposure to problems that matter and giving the healthcare centre access to fresh academic perspectives on potential solutions.

The MoU also establishes a framework for healthcare-focused capstone projects, student internships and ongoing knowledge-sharing initiatives between the two institutions. By connecting education with clinical practice in this sustained way, both organisations aim to generate practical outcomes: stronger professional development for ICLDEC staff, more relevant experience for students, and new approaches to the challenges shaping healthcare delivery.

Dr. Mai Al Jaber, Chief Executive Officer of ICLDEC, observed that as data and digital technologies play an increasingly significant role in healthcare, teams require the skills to use them effectively in their day-to-day work. The partnership, she noted, provides structured training directly connected to the challenges encountered in clinical and operational settings, helping to build capabilities that support better decision-making and care delivery.

Dr. Yousef Al Assaf, President of RIT Dubai, emphasised that the UAE’s healthcare future depends on professionals equally comfortable with data and digital tools as with patients. Through this partnership, RIT Dubai’s applied, technology-driven approach will reach ICLDEC’s teams, whilst the centre’s case studies will keep the programme anchored in the realities of healthcare, giving students the opportunity to tackle challenges that matter across Abu Dhabi and beyond.

What it means for Abu Dhabi

This partnership addresses a fundamental challenge facing healthcare systems throughout the region: the need to develop a workforce equipped for an increasingly digital healthcare environment. As data analytics, health informatics and digital tools become integral to clinical decision-making, the availability of structured, relevant training becomes essential. By establishing this collaboration, the two institutions are helping to ensure that healthcare professionals across Abu Dhabi can develop these capabilities without needing to look elsewhere.

The initiative also strengthens the broader ecosystem of professional development in the Emirates. As student projects at RIT Dubai engage with real healthcare challenges, and as ICLDEC staff access academic resources and expertise, both organisations contribute to a more sophisticated understanding of how education and healthcare practice can reinforce one another. This kind of sustained partnership between educational institutions and healthcare providers supports the kind of continuous improvement and innovation that healthcare systems require.
