Shaheen and Al Maha will field four teams across multiple categories at the 56th Emirates Dubai 7s, from 27th to 29th November, marking a significant moment in the nation's rugby development.
The UAE Rugby Federation has confirmed its participation in the forthcoming Emirates Dubai 7s with four teams representing two of the nation’s leading rugby organisations. Shaheen will compete with two squads, one entering the International category to test itself against established national sides and international teams, whilst its second team will contest the Local category against established UAE-based clubs. Al Maha brings two teams to the tournament, with one participating in the Local category and another in the Under-19 category, a section that draws competition from teams and schools throughout the Emirates.
The tournament takes place from 27th to 29th November at The Sevens Stadium in Dubai, with the teams preparing under the guidance of Khouldoun Mlayah, Philadelphia Orlando, Iblee Devitalu and Yousuf Shaker. As we reported in our coverage of Emirates Dubai 7s expanding to become the world’s largest international sevens tournament, the event has grown substantially in scope this year, positioning it as a premier fixture on the global sevens calendar.
Mohammed Sultan Alzaabi, Secretary-General of the UAE Rugby Federation, emphasises that participation in the tournament affords players valuable experience in competitive settings against differing styles of rugby. Such exposure, he notes, contributes meaningfully to the development of players’ technical capabilities and strengthens their preparation for forthcoming competitions. The Federation views the Emirates Dubai 7s as a cornerstone of its broader strategy to elevate national teams and expand rugby’s participation across the UAE.
What it means for Abu Dhabi
The participation of UAE teams in this calibre of tournament underscores the nation’s commitment to developing rugby at multiple levels. By fielding teams across the International, Local and Under-19 categories, the Federation creates pathways for player development from youth through to elite competition. The exposure gained through competing against international sides and established local clubs strengthens the technical foundation of the sport within the Emirates.
This competitive engagement aligns with the UAE’s broader ambition to establish itself as a centre for sporting excellence. The tournament’s expansion and the Federation’s strategic involvement reflect a growing investment in rugby infrastructure and player development, contributing to the nation’s position as a destination for international sporting events and a developer of athletic talent across disciplines.
