From 30 October to 3 November, the UAE brought its living traditions to Morocco's celebrated Tan-Tan Moussem, creating moments of genuine cultural exchange that honoured the deep fraternal bonds between two nations.
The five-day festival in the Moroccan town of Tan-Tan concluded this week with the UAE’s participation leaving a resonant mark on visitors and heritage enthusiasts alike. Organised by the Abu Dhabi Heritage Authority alongside the Emirates Camel Racing Federation and the General Women’s Union, the UAE pavilion created an immersive window into Emirati culture at a moment of particular significance: Morocco’s celebration of Unity Day.
Abdullah Butti Al Qubaisi, Executive Director of the Heritage Awareness and Knowledge Sector at the Abu Dhabi Heritage Authority, reflected on the achievement with quiet satisfaction. “We were deeply pleased by the remarkable visitor turnout and keen interest across all sections of the UAE pavilion,” he noted. The goal, he explained, had been to create a living platform that introduced global audiences to the authentic texture of Emirati culture through folk showcases, artisanal crafts, and traditional competitions. As we reported in our coverage of the UAE’s cultural voice at the Moussem, these displays enabled visitors to experience traditions that remain central to national identity.
The pavilion’s various sections revealed different facets of heritage practice. Exhibits explored traditional Emirati life, Bedouin customs of hospitality, and the heritage furnishings and tent construction methods that embody desert living. Throughout, the displays underscored the deep-rooted cultural ties uniting the UAE and Morocco, a relationship that extends far beyond this single festival gathering.
The final day brought particular moments of resonance. An awards ceremony honoured the winners of the “Best Traditional Tent Display” competition, celebrating authentic preservation of desert traditions. As evening fell, a poetic gathering assembled poets from both nations who recited verses celebrating cultural heritage and the enduring role of poetry in collective memory. Emirati artist Fadel Al Mazrouei performed a live concert in the El Ouatia area, his music met with enthusiastic engagement from audiences. These moments reminded attendees of the vital importance of preserving heritage and passing it forward to future generations.
Al Qubaisi concluded with gratitude to Morocco for its exceptional hosting, and affirmation of the UAE’s commitment to sustaining its active cultural presence at future editions of this prestigious gathering. The UAE’s participation in the Tan-Tan Moussem, which dates back to 2014, reflects an ongoing mandate to showcase Emirati heritage on international platforms and expand cooperation with global institutions dedicated to heritage preservation.
What it means for Abu Dhabi
This year’s successful presence at the Tan-Tan Moussem strengthens Abu Dhabi’s position as a custodian of living heritage and cultural traditions. By engaging global audiences in authentic displays of Emirati customs and craftsmanship, the UAE’s participation reinforces its commitment to safeguarding traditional knowledge and ensuring these practices are transmitted to future generations, not merely preserved in archives but celebrated and experienced.
The convergence of Moroccan and Emirati cultural expression during Morocco’s Unity Day celebrations speaks to something deeper: the value Abu Dhabi places on fraternal cooperation and mutual heritage respect. These sustained international efforts contribute to the preservation of traditional knowledge while positioning the emirate as a thoughtful advocate for cultural continuity in an ever-changing world.
