Sharjah Maritime Academy Convenes First Sustainability Competition Uniting 115 Students Across the Emirates

A landmark gathering of emerging talent from higher education institutions and schools showcases innovation in maritime sustainability, from AI-powered ocean protection to renewable energy solutions.

The maritime sector stands at a pivotal moment where the ingenuity of young minds, shaped by rigorous academic training, meets the urgent imperative of environmental stewardship. Sharjah Maritime Academy recently hosted a competition that embodied this convergence, bringing together 115 students from sixteen educational institutions across the UAE to present practical solutions to some of the most pressing challenges facing our oceans and supply chains.

The Sustainability Competition, held in conjunction with the International Day of Supply Chain, Logistics and Transportation, featured thirty-five innovative projects from thirteen higher education institutions and three schools. These submissions spanned an impressive range of disciplines: maritime transportation, smart port infrastructure, renewable energy systems, artificial intelligence applications, marine conservation and the circular economy. The breadth of this engagement signals a generation preparing to reshape the maritime industry according to principles of environmental responsibility.

Themed “From Classroom Innovation to Real-World Sustainability: Empowering the Next Generation to Shape a Greener Future,” the event sought to strengthen the vital connection between academic learning and industry practice, aligning educational endeavour with the labour market’s evolving needs. This commitment reflects the UAE’s broader engagement with artificial intelligence and economic resilience, extending to the maritime sphere.

The participating institutions represented a cross-section of the UAE’s educational landscape: Khalifa University, United Arab Emirates University, Higher Colleges of Technology, University of Sharjah, University of Dubai, Abu Dhabi University, Abu Dhabi Polytechnic, Amity University Dubai, Hamdan Bin Mohammed Smart University, University of Wollongong Dubai and Sharjah Maritime Academy itself. Three secondary schools also participated: Ajman American Private School, International Indian School Abu Dhabi and JSS Private School. This diversity of participation reflects how interest in maritime sustainability and innovation now extends across educational levels.

The projects themselves demonstrated considerable ingenuity. Students developed AI-powered ocean protection systems, marine debris collection robots, microplastic filtration technologies, solar-powered maritime infrastructure, sustainable aquaculture models and waste-to-energy solutions. Each represented not merely academic exercise but a genuine attempt to translate environmental concern into technological and operational reality.

Ravi Shankar, Chairman of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers in the Middle East, delivered a keynote address examining key industry trends and challenges, emphasising the importance of sustainability and supply chain resilience. Dr. Hashim Abdullah Bin Sarhan Al Zaabi, Chancellor of Sharjah Maritime Academy, reflected on the institution’s philosophy: “Education must go beyond knowledge acquisition to empower students to develop practical solutions to real-world challenges. By bringing together 115 students from across the UAE, this competition creates a platform where innovation meets industry expertise, encouraging the next generation to contribute to a more sustainable future.”

Beyond the competition itself, the event facilitated substantive dialogue among academic leaders, maritime professionals and industry experts, exploring themes of sustainable logistics, supply chain resilience and the evolving landscape of maritime transportation. A dedicated session examined key challenges confronting the maritime sector alongside emerging opportunities for its development. The programme concluded with a student project showcase and awards ceremony recognising both participating teams and those whose projects demonstrated particular distinction in addressing sustainability challenges.

What it means for Abu Dhabi

This competition signals the UAE’s commitment to the Net Zero 2050 Strategic Initiative through education and innovation. By cultivating a generation of maritime professionals grounded in sustainability principles from the outset of their careers, the UAE strengthens its capacity to achieve ambitious environmental targets whilst maintaining economic dynamism in sectors critical to its prosperity.

The event also demonstrates how collaboration between academia and industry creates pathways to meaningful employment for graduates, addressing labour market needs whilst driving technological advancement. Students who engage with real-world challenges through projects like these emerge better equipped to lead the maritime and logistics sectors through their transformation, ensuring that Abu Dhabi and the wider Emirates remain at the forefront of sustainable maritime practice.
