A significant moment of arrival unfolded at Zayed International Airport on 5 November when Condor’s inaugural service from Frankfurt touched down, bringing with it the promise of enhanced travel between Abu Dhabi and Germany. The daily route, operated by the airline’s advanced A330neo aircraft and developed as part of a codeshare agreement with Etihad Airways, continues onward to Bangkok, threading together three important markets across two continents.
The milestone reflects the deepening ties between the emirate and Germany, with this addition to Condor’s growing Abu Dhabi operations now bringing the total of weekly flights between the two markets to 49. The service complements Condor’s recently launched Berlin route, strengthening the airline’s presence across Germany’s principal aviation hubs.
The collaboration between Abu Dhabi Airports, Condor and Etihad Airways was marked by a ceremonial welcome that underscored the shared commitment to expanding connectivity. Carsten Nørland, Chief Commercial Officer at Abu Dhabi Airports, observed that the arrival represents another meaningful step in the relationship between the emirate and Germany, enhancing options for passengers whilst supporting tourism growth and deepening economic and cultural ties.
For Abu Dhabi’s cultural and tourism sector, the route carries particular significance. Haitham Al Khamis, Acting Director of Tourism Products Development at the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, highlighted that Germany remains a cornerstone market for the emirate. He noted that the timing of the service arrives as Abu Dhabi continues its evolution through sustained investment in cultural landmarks, entertainment and hospitality offerings.
Peter Gerber, Chief Executive Officer of Condor, emphasised the strategic importance of Abu Dhabi within the airline’s network, offering guests enhanced choice when travelling between Germany, the UAE and the wider Asian markets via the Bangkok connection. The carrier’s premium Business Class and service standards accompany the daily frequency.
Wei Jin, Etihad Airways’ Interim Chief Revenue and Commercial Officer, characterised the partnership as an important milestone in the carriers’ growing collaboration. By connecting their complementary networks, the arrangement creates additional choice for customers traversing the route between Europe, Abu Dhabi and beyond, with Condor’s onward Bangkok service adding further connectivity across the Europe–Asia corridor.
What it means for Abu Dhabi
The Frankfurt service signals the continued expansion of Zayed International Airport’s international connectivity, particularly with established European markets. With weekly flights to Germany now at 49, the emirate strengthens its position as a gateway between Europe and Asia, supporting both leisure and business travel whilst enhancing the emirate’s accessibility for German visitors exploring its cultural and hospitality offerings.
The route amplifies Abu Dhabi’s appeal as a strategic hub within global aviation networks. As recent expansion with Air India Express has similarly demonstrated, the airport’s growing route network supports tourism growth, facilitates international commerce and creates opportunities for residents seeking enhanced travel choices to key global destinations.
