ADNOC extends energy ties with India through landmark LNG agreement with Gujarat Energy

A long-term supply partnership marks the first commercial sale from XRG's international portfolio, positioning Abu Dhabi's energy giant among the world's leading LNG suppliers

The deepening energy partnership between the United Arab Emirates and India gathered fresh momentum this week with the signing of a long-term liquefied natural gas agreement between ADNOC and Gujarat Energy Ltd. The accord represents a significant milestone for both parties: for ADNOC, it marks the inaugural commercial deployment of molecules from XRG’s international portfolio, the group’s globally integrated gas and LNG business; for Gujarat Energy, it secures a reliable, long-term supply of one of the world’s most sought-after energy commodities.

Under the terms of the agreement, Gujarat Energy will receive up to 4 million tonnes of LNG over a decade, with deliveries commencing in 2028. The arrangement extends ADNOC’s presence in India’s energy sector, representing the company’s fifth LNG supply agreement with customers in the country. It builds on the momentum created by ADNOC’s global LNG marketing and trading platform, which was established at Abu Dhabi Global Market in July of this year.

Rashid Al Mazrouei, Chief Marketing and Origination Officer for LNG at ADNOC, characterised the agreement as strengthening ADNOC’s established energy relationships within India. He emphasised that the partnership reflects the group’s commitment to delivering dependable, long-term LNG supplies through an integrated marketing and trading platform capable of connecting growing international portfolios with customers across key global markets.

The momentum behind this agreement speaks to the platform’s early success. Since its launch, the platform has secured supply agreements with INPEX in Japan and Gulf Group in Thailand, alongside the Gujarat Energy arrangement. These arrangements underpin ADNOC’s broader ambition to position itself among the world’s foremost LNG suppliers, with targets of 47 million tonnes per annum of marketable LNG beyond 2030.

The agreement represents an evolution for XRG as a globally integrated gas and LNG business, one that connects supply sourced outside the Gulf with demand across Asia through ADNOC’s sophisticated marketing infrastructure. This architecture allows the group to bring molecules from its international portfolio to customers across continents.

Avantika Singh Aulakh, Managing Director of Gujarat Energy Ltd, underscored the collaborative potential of the partnership, noting that Gujarat Energy’s position within India’s energy landscape, supported by robust regasification infrastructure and a widespread city gas network spanning 44 districts across six states, makes it an ideal partner. She highlighted natural gas’s role in supporting India’s transition toward cleaner energy, serving as a lower-carbon option that enhances industrial efficiency, provides households with a safer cooking fuel, and accelerates growth in environmentally conscious transportation sectors.

The agreement emerges at a moment of extraordinary energy sector activity in Abu Dhabi. As we reported in our coverage of ADIPEC 2026, which concluded with record US$67 billion in energy agreements, the global energy community continues to recognise Abu Dhabi as a centre of strategic importance and commercial opportunity.

What it means for Abu Dhabi

This agreement reinforces Abu Dhabi’s position as a major player in global energy markets and underscores the sustained confidence that international energy companies place in ADNOC’s capabilities and reliability. The expansion of ADNOC’s LNG portfolio through XRG’s international assets diversifies the emirate’s energy business beyond traditional hydrocarbon reserves, creating new revenue streams and deepening commercial relationships with some of the world’s most dynamic economies.

For Abu Dhabi’s broader economy, the agreement exemplifies the strategic value of integrated energy platforms and the importance of establishing commercial hubs such as Abu Dhabi Global Market. The platform’s early success in securing major supply agreements positions the emirate as a sophisticated orchestrator of global energy flows, attracting international businesses and reinforcing Abu Dhabi’s reputation as a centre for energy innovation and strategic thinking.
