A new award recognises the families who nurture talent, instil discipline and sustain the UAE's growing prominence in the sport
Behind every athlete who steps onto the mat stands a constellation of support: the families who recognise potential, encourage perseverance and embody the values that transform sport into something far greater than competition. The UAE Jiu-Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts Federation has turned this quiet truth into formal recognition with the launch of the Jiu-Jitsu Family Award, an initiative that honours Emirati and expatriate families whose dedication has become foundational to the nation’s sporting ascendancy.
The award emerges from a simple but profound understanding. Families, the Federation recognises, are often the first to identify young talent and nurture it through years of training, sacrifice and commitment. They create the environment in which discipline flourishes, where determination becomes habitual and where respect forms the bedrock of character. This domestic foundation has proven essential to the UAE’s increasingly commanding position in jiu-jitsu, both regionally and on the international stage.
Fahad Ali Al Shamsi, Secretary-General of the UAE Jiu-Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts Federation, articulated the significance of this recognition. “Families have played an important role in the growth of jiu-jitsu in the UAE,” he observed. “They are often the first to recognise young talent and support athletes as they develop their skills and work towards success.” The award itself represents a deliberate shift in how sporting achievement is measured and celebrated, one that acknowledges contribution beyond the podium.
Eligibility extends to families, whether Emirati or expatriate, with at least two members involved in jiu-jitsu in any capacity: as athletes, coaches, referees, administrators or volunteers. The assessment framework reflects this breadth of involvement, evaluating not merely medals accumulated but the family’s sustained commitment, the diversity of roles undertaken, their service to the community and the authenticity of their sporting values. The judging committee, drawn from the Federation’s Board of Directors and relevant departments, will consider the technical development and years of participation, ensuring that recognition flows to those whose legacy extends across years rather than seasons.
The initiative arrives at a moment of considerable momentum. As we reported in our coverage of the Federation’s third championship season finale, the sport continues to flourish as a vehicle for talent development and national achievement. The award further cements this trajectory by inviting families themselves, alongside clubs and academies, to submit nominations that capture their stories and contributions.
Nominations will remain open from November 6 to 17, with winners to be announced and honoured on November 22. The Federation has encouraged eligible families to participate and share their narratives, recognising that their involvement strengthens not only individual athletes but the entire sporting ecosystem that underpins the UAE’s standing as a global jiu-jitsu centre.
What it means for Abu Dhabi
The Jiu-Jitsu Family Award represents a strategic investment in the very foundation of sporting excellence: the family unit. By formalising recognition of family involvement, the Federation strengthens the social and domestic structures that sustain athletic development. This approach deepens participation across generations and encourages households to view jiu-jitsu not merely as an individual pursuit but as a collective endeavour rooted in shared values of discipline, respect and determination.
For Abu Dhabi specifically, the initiative reinforces the emirate’s position as a nucleus of international jiu-jitsu excellence. Strategic investment in sport as a driver of national development has become increasingly integral to the emirate’s vision. The Family Award acknowledges that this vision is realised not through institutions alone but through countless families whose quiet commitment transforms potential into achievement and sustains the pipeline of talent that feeds regional and international competition.
