Five thousand runners converge on Al Ain to celebrate sport, heritage and community

The ADNOC Al Ain Half Marathon drew participants of all abilities through the historic oasis city, weaving competitive racing with a journey through the Emirate's most cherished landmarks.

The morning air carried the collective energy of five thousand runners as they gathered across Al Ain, each poised at the starting line of the ADNOC Al Ain Half Marathon 2026. What unfolded was more than a sporting event; it was a celebration of community, wellness and the city’s enduring cultural heritage, woven together through the simple act of moving forward.

Organised by Abu Dhabi Sports Council in collaboration with ADNOC, the race offered four distances to accommodate every ambition. The 21 kilometre half marathon challenged serious competitors, whilst the 10 kilometre, 5 kilometre and 2.5 kilometre options invited families, amateurs and children to discover the particular satisfaction of running. This inclusive approach reflected a broader commitment to positioning sport not as an exclusive pursuit but as a pathway to improved public health and enhanced quality of life across the community.

The route itself became a living gallery of Al Ain’s most significant cultural and natural treasures. Runners traced pathways past the serene Al Ain Oasis, passed beneath the storied walls of Al Jahili Fort, swept along the circumference of Jebel Hafeet’s imposing presence, and navigated the city’s notable landmarks including Al Ain Museum, Qasr Al Muwaiji, Hazza bin Zayed Stadium and the Clock Tower Roundabout. The experience combined the rigour of athletic competition with something equally valuable: an intimate encounter with the Emirate’s history and architectural character.

Aref Hamad Al Awani, General Secretary of Abu Dhabi Sports Council, observed that the turnout exemplified the community’s deepening awareness of sport’s place in modern life. He noted that the event strengthened Al Ain’s standing as a distinguished venue for major sporting occasions and served as preparation for the ADNOC Abu Dhabi Marathon scheduled for 12th December, encouraging participants to refine their fitness and readiness.

Saif Al Falahi, Acting Director of the People, Emiratisation and Corporate Support Directorate at ADNOC, emphasised the organisation’s longstanding commitment to community health and wellbeing. He described the half marathon as a platform where people of differing ages and abilities could gather alongside elite runners in celebration of positive competition. For ADNOC, the event reflected a broader responsibility to encourage healthy and active lifestyles whilst reinforcing the UAE’s position as a leading international destination for sporting endeavours.

What it means for Abu Dhabi

The scale of participation demonstrates how deeply sporting events have become woven into Abu Dhabi’s social fabric. When five thousand individuals of various ages and nationalities choose to invest their morning in collective activity, it speaks to a cultural shift toward wellness and community engagement. This momentum carries implications for public health outcomes across the Emirate, suggesting measurable benefits as more residents adopt active lifestyles.

Beyond health metrics, events of this calibre enhance Abu Dhabi’s international reputation. By showcasing Al Ain’s historical and natural attractions to thousands of participants whilst maintaining rigorous competitive standards, the Emirate positions itself as a destination where sporting excellence and cultural heritage coexist meaningfully. This positioning strengthens Abu Dhabi’s appeal to both international athletes and tourism audiences globally.
