A landmark gathering this November will examine how occupational health and sensory rehabilitation programmes can enhance quality of life and independence for People of Determination across the Emirates.
The International Conference on Occupational Health and Inclusion of People of Determination will bring together healthcare professionals, educators and innovators to Abu Dhabi from 24th to 26th November. Jointly organised by the Zayed Authority for People of Determination and the Emirates Occupational Health and Community Health Society, the conference will explore practical approaches to health rehabilitation and integrated care that connect oral health with broader sensory and motor development.
At the heart of the discussions will be a novel understanding of how oral-motor functions support fundamental capabilities. The relationship between chewing and swallowing, for instance, extends far beyond nutrition; research presented at the conference will demonstrate how jaw function influences balance, head and neck positioning, and even middle-ear mechanisms. For People of Determination who experience difficulties with these functions, structured therapeutic intervention can prove transformative.
Celestial Cocoon, an organisation specialising in therapeutic sensory spaces and integrated care systems, will present a comprehensive training programme featuring interactive workshops and practical applications. Dr. Nadia Ursu, founder and president of Celestial Cocoon, has designed the programme to bridge scientific research with real-world implementation. The approach introduces bilateral chewing exercises using specialised therapeutic tools, supervised by professionals and tailored to individual needs. Crucially, the programme recognises that some People of Determination may experience pain or discomfort without the capacity to articulate their symptoms clearly, emphasising the importance of training families and caregivers to recognise non-verbal signs.
The work reflects a broader shift in healthcare innovation across the Emirates. As part of initiatives already underway, authorities have been developing programmes to enhance healthcare access and quality of life for People of Determination, whilst strategic partnerships have been forged to advance broader empowerment initiatives.
Dr. Ursu emphasises that innovation in healthcare need not depend solely on advanced technology. Short, consistent training sessions incorporated into daily care routines, implemented with appropriate professional assessment, may support feeding skills, comfort and independence. The involvement of families and caregivers proves essential; home-based care skills developed through such programmes can reduce recurring healthcare needs and ease pressure on medical services whilst enhancing dignity and participation in everyday activities.
Looking beyond this conference, Dr. Ursu has expressed ambition to expand the Celestial Cocoon programme across all seven emirates, increasing its reach and supporting wider adoption of inclusive health education. The UAE’s supportive environment for innovative healthcare initiatives, she notes, creates genuine opportunity to empower People of Determination and measurably improve their quality of life.
What it means for Abu Dhabi
Abu Dhabi’s hosting of this international conference underscores the emirate’s commitment to advancing evidence-based healthcare approaches that enhance wellbeing and independence for People of Determination. By bringing together practitioners and innovators to examine integrated care models, the conference strengthens Abu Dhabi’s position as a centre of healthcare innovation and inclusive policy development.
The practical frameworks discussed at the conference, particularly those focusing on family and caregiver training, offer pathways to enhance community-based support systems across Abu Dhabi. By developing home-based care capacity and helping families recognise and respond to health needs more effectively, the emirate can build more resilient, sustainable systems that reduce pressure on healthcare facilities whilst improving outcomes for People of Determination and their families.
