The UAE marks a milestone in dermatological medicine with the world's first oral vitiligo therapy

As the Emirates celebrates the launch of an innovative treatment for a condition affecting millions globally, the country reinforces its position as a leader in pharmaceutical innovation and patient care

The moment a new therapeutic option becomes available to patients can feel, to those who have lived with a condition’s burden, like a small revolution. Yesterday, as the 10th Annual Dermatology Conference concluded at the InterContinental Dubai – Festival City, the United Arab Emirates officially marked such a moment: the launch of the first innovative oral treatment for vitiligo, positioning the country as the first nation worldwide to approve this therapy.

Vitiligo, a chronic autoimmune skin condition in which the body’s own pigment-producing cells are mistakenly attacked and destroyed, affects between one and two per cent of the global population. The condition typically manifests as patches of depigmented skin across various areas of the body. While the science is well-understood—genetics play a pivotal role, with family history significantly increasing susceptibility—the lived experience of those with vitiligo extends far beyond the visible patches. Research confirms that the condition carries a substantial psychological and social burden, affecting self-confidence and daily quality of life in ways that transcend the physical.

The significance of this approval lies not merely in the availability of a new medication, but in what it represents about the nation’s healthcare ambitions. As we reported following the initial approval announcement, the UAE’s decision to authorise this treatment reflects a commitment to accelerating patient access to medical innovations and adopting modern pharmaceutical therapies at the earliest opportunity. The medication, available only by prescription, is prescribed and monitored by specialists in immunological diseases, with dosage and duration tailored to individual patient needs.

The launch celebration drew Sheikha Dr. Noura Al Qasimi, Consultant Ophthalmologist and President of the Emirates Medical Association, who spoke of the achievement as part of a broader vision held by the nation’s leadership. She emphasised that the country’s successive achievements in healthcare reflect a commitment to placing community health at the centre of national priorities, embedded within the state’s strategic framework. The health and well-being of the population, she noted, represents the core of the UAE’s development plans, with healthcare recognised as a key sector for achieving comprehensive prosperity.

The three-day conference itself served as a testament to the region’s engagement with dermatological science. Dr. Ayman Alnaeem, President of the Dermatology Division and of the Conference, highlighted the breadth of scientific inquiry on display: discussions ranged across skin aging, eczema, acne, skin cancer, infectious and inflammatory skin diseases, alongside innovations in artificial intelligence applications, clinical imaging, and novel therapeutic approaches. The event has evolved into a landmark gathering for the region, a sustainable platform for strengthening collaboration among specialists and enabling continuing professional development.

What it means for Abu Dhabi

For patients in the Emirates living with vitiligo, this approval signals that medical treatment options are evolving in response to global evidence. Non-segmental vitiligo, the form this oral therapy targets, now has a pharmaceutical option previously unavailable in any country. The arrival of this treatment here positions the UAE as a destination for dermatological care that remains at the forefront of therapeutic advancement.

More broadly, the approval underscores the UAE’s healthcare sector as one that does not simply follow global developments, but actively shapes them. By becoming the first nation to approve this innovative therapy, the country continues to reinforce its position as a leader in medical innovation, attracting specialists and patients alike who seek access to treatments grounded in the latest scientific evidence.
