Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Reviews Environmental Progress as EAD Marks Three Decades of Conservation Leadership

The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi presented substantial achievements in air quality, marine protection and biodiversity conservation at its third board meeting of 2026, whilst charting an ambitious environmental policy roadmap through 2032.

His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler’s Representative in Al Dhafra Region and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD), convened the agency’s third board meeting of 2026 at Al Nakheel Palace, where he examined comprehensive performance metrics alongside strategic environmental initiatives designed to safeguard Abu Dhabi’s natural resources and enhance ecological resilience across the emirate.

Integrated Environmental Stewardship

His Highness emphasised that environmental protection represents a shared responsibility requiring coordinated engagement between government entities and community stakeholders. He acknowledged that Abu Dhabi’s rapid development necessitates a sophisticated environmental governance framework grounded in legislative rigour, scientific evidence and collaborative partnerships—an approach aligned with the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, to preserve the nation’s natural heritage and secure its sustainability for successive generations.

Measurable Environmental Outcomes

EAD presented encouraging performance indicators spanning January to August 2026. Air quality compliance with national standards achieved 91.2 per cent, surpassing the federal benchmark of 90 per cent. The Sustainable Fisheries Index and microbial water quality indicator each sustained optimal scores of 100 per cent, whilst the Marine Water Eutrophication Index reached 80 per cent, exceeding its 70 per cent target. Environmental compliance rates attained 94 per cent following 193 enforcement actions across industrial, commercial and waste management sectors.

Strategic groundwater reserves totalling 22,000 cubic metres were secured at Umm Ghafah and Al Shuwaib to bolster emergency preparedness, whilst the agency licensed major development projects whilst maintaining rigorous environmental standards from initial planning phases.

Marine and Terrestrial Conservation

EAD’s marine and terrestrial initiatives demonstrated substantive progress. The recently launched Abu Dhabi Mangrove Observatory expanded monitoring capabilities, whilst the Abu Dhabi Coral Gardens initiative exceeded 85 per cent of its annual target. Protected area management recorded participation from more than 71,000 ecotourism users, generating economic and environmental value simultaneously.

His Highness commended these achievements as reflections of Abu Dhabi’s ecological richness and the calibre of national scientific and field monitoring expertise.

Desert Rehabilitation and Future Priorities

The meeting examined EAD’s Abu Dhabi Desert Vegetation Cover Restoration Initiative, which seeks to rehabilitate desert environments through strategic planting of native species using minimal water resources. Designed as a collaborative undertaking involving environmental associations, volunteer organisations and educational institutions, His Highness approved a two- to three-year pilot phase at selected locations prior to scientific evaluation and potential expansion.

His Highness directed EAD to advance the environmental sector through sustained investment in national talent, contemporary technologies and artificial intelligence applications. He called for strengthened partnerships with private sector enterprises, academic institutions and international organisations to enhance Abu Dhabi’s capacity to address emerging environmental challenges and ensure long-term resource sustainability.

Strategic Policy Framework 2026–2032

EAD presented a comprehensive environmental policy roadmap spanning 2026 to 2028, encompassing groundwater management, air quality, ecotourism development, species and habitat protection, greenhouse gas emissions reduction, waste management, climate change adaptation and circular economy transition. His Highness approved the environmental policy and legislation roadmap for 2027–2028 and directed accelerated implementation through coordinated stakeholder engagement. The agenda included updating the Climate Change Strategy 2028–2032, positioning Abu Dhabi at the forefront of regional environmental governance.

The meeting concluded with briefings on Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital operations, where 1,325 falcons and 1,930 pets received treatment during the reporting period. As EAD commemorates 30 years since establishment, His Highness reaffirmed the agency’s pivotal role in securing Abu Dhabi’s environmental future and the sustainability of its natural heritage.
