UAEU Launches Desert by Design Competition to Reimagine Al Ain's Urban Future

United Arab Emirates University invites students and professionals across the emirates to envision sustainable architectural solutions for Al Ain, combining contemporary design with the region's distinctive environmental and cultural heritage.

United Arab Emirates University has unveiled the Desert by Design Competition for Desert Architecture and Urbanism Al Ain Edition 2026, a significant initiative marking the institution’s Golden Jubilee celebrations. The competition positions Al Ain’s exceptional environmental diversity, cultural richness and urban heritage as the centrepiece of an ambitious design challenge.

The competition extends an invitation to students from higher education institutions throughout the UAE and established professionals to develop proposals that authentically respond to the region’s natural environment and climate whilst drawing meaningfully upon its cultural foundations and anticipating its future requirements and aspirations.

A Platform for Contemporary Desert Design

Prof Mohamed Al Marzouqi, Dean of the College of Engineering, articulated the initiative’s vision: “Al Ain Region has a distinctive character shaped over a long history, giving it a well-established cultural, urban, and environmental character. Through the Desert by Design Competition, we aspire to provide students and professionals with a platform to present visions inspired by this distinctive character, expressed through a contemporary architectural language capable of responding to future aspirations.”

He emphasised the competition’s broader purpose: “The competition reflects the college’s commitment to connecting academic knowledge with community and environmental issues, while strengthening the role of students at higher education institutions across the UAE and of professionals in developing innovative ideas that contribute to sustainable architectural and urban solutions suited to the nature and distinctive characteristics of desert environments.”

Competition Framework and Themes

The competition is structured around five principal themes: culture, heritage, climate, public realm, and future urban aspirations. Two distinct categories accommodate different career stages: Students and Early-Career Professionals. The initiative welcomes submissions from disciplines including architecture, architectural engineering, urbanism, urban design, planning, landscape architecture, interior design, engineering and sustainability.

Participation remains available to students currently enrolled in, or recent graduates of, accredited higher education institutions across the UAE. The competition offers total prize value of AED320,000, with registration and participation entirely free of charge—a deliberate approach designed to encourage broad talent participation and attract creative visions across relevant professional disciplines.

Timeline and Submission Details

Registration will remain open until 4 October 2026, with submissions required by 20 October 2026. Jury evaluation will commence during October, culminating in an awards ceremony and exhibition scheduled for November 2026.
