In the hands of Stella McCartney, the most delicate of fabrics and fluid of shapes somehow becomes a testament to a woman’s unique power and confidence. Floaty summer frocks may look wispy at first glance, but look closer and you’ll see the juxtaposed prints resemble animal and bird patterns – a hint at the underlying strength under the demure appearance. The concept of fragility/strength progresses throughout the collection, starting with these airy dresses and culminating in perhaps the hardest piece: a gorgeous indigo dress with exaggerated buckles at the shoulders and cut-outs at the hem – really the only bits of hardware or embellishment you’ll see in this season’s line. So too the use of silk underscored this theme, a most deceptive material – although soft and nearly weightless, the tensile strength of silk is close to that of steel. Used to great effect in billowing, shimmering parkas and trenchcoats, silk is the perfect choice for a luxurious blend of comfort, utility and relaxed elegance. Stella McCartney Spring/Summer 2015
