For his spring/summer 2015 menswear collection, Smith’s inspiration starts with the opening day of legendary art exhibit: the Venice Biennale. It’s an unforgettable sight to see when artists and gallery curators from the world over descend on Giardini Park, interpreting traditional dress codes with creative confidence. So too in the Paul Smith collection, a functional flamboyance predominates: tuxedo lapels are paired with T- shirts, suit sleeves are buttonless and rolled- up, and trainers are consistently snazzy. This season, a longer length in suit jackets lends a hint of nostalgia to the line. Suits are teamed with wide-leg trousers, sometimes piped with colourful stripes and often zipped at the ankle. In the runway show, Smith paired the suiting jacket with other wardrobe staples, such as trackpants, pyjamas, or shorts, while the trousers were offset with sweatshirts or a sporty Harrington jacket. It’s the perfect summation of the Paul Smith worldview: relaxed, eclectic and highly individual.
