Eleven pioneering initiatives spanning education, technology, media and culture have been honoured for their transformative contributions to advancing Arabic across the world, marking ten years of recognition for those championing the language's future.
The Arabic language stands at a remarkable juncture. Preserved within its classical structures lies a living, evolving instrument of knowledge, creativity and connection. This tension between heritage and progress formed the beating heart of the 10th Mohammed Bin Rashid Arabic Language Award ceremony, where H.H. Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, President of the UAE Olympic Committee, honoured eleven exceptional winners for their pioneering work across the globe.
Organised by the Mohammed Bin Rashid Library under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, the Award has established itself over a decade as the world’s most significant platform for recognising excellence in advancing Arabic. This milestone edition speaks to something profound: the belief that a language of such richness need not retreat into history, but can instead embrace innovation whilst remaining rooted in its profound cultural identity.
The eleven winners represent a remarkable breadth of endeavour. In education, the UAE Ministry of Education’s Baseline Assessment initiative was recognised for advancing how Arabic is taught in early years, whilst Yemen’s Funoon Al Fus’ha programme received honour for its innovative work in school education. These complement the technological achievements: SARD, developed at Zayed University’s Zai Centre, uses artificial intelligence to screen for reading difficulties, whilst Egypt’s Mizan platform serves as an Arabic morphological pattern analyser.
The media and cultural sphere reflects equally dynamic innovation. Bulbul Magazine, a children’s science and culture publication from the United States, stands as a testament to Arabic’s global reach, whilst the Azraq Platform from Jordan’s Abdul Hameed Shoman Foundation has become a vital voice for Arabic language advocacy across electronic and social media channels. Morocco’s Sawt Al Qassam initiative and Sudan’s Alfa’l Library for Girls each address something fundamental: how Arabic connects with artistic expression and reading culture.
Perhaps most tellingly, the UAE’s Linguistic Security Initiative, developed by the Arabic Language Centre at the Abu Dhabi Police College, was honoured for its work in language policy and planning. This recognition speaks to the complexity of sustaining a language in the modern age, where deliberate, thoughtful institutional commitment proves essential. Similarly, Saudi Arabia’s Ta’allam Muf’am bil Laeb project received recognition for its work in localisation and translation, ensuring Arabic remains relevant across contemporary contexts.
The Award’s international scope reached its zenith with the Distinguished Global Personality Award bestowed upon Tim Mackintosh-Smith, the British Arabist, historian and translator whose scholarship has profoundly influenced how Western audiences understand Arab history and heritage. His recognition underscores a truth the Award embodies: Arabic’s future depends not on isolation, but on meaningful exchange between cultures.
H.H. Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed emphasised that Arabic forms a fundamental pillar of national identity and cultural heritage. He noted that the Award reflects a vision of Arabic as a language of knowledge, creativity and innovation, one that can continue to develop in harmony with technological advances. Each of the eleven winners receives $70,000, with the total awards value reaching $770,000, demonstrating the scope of institutional commitment behind this initiative.
What it means for Abu Dhabi
The 10th edition of this Award carries particular significance for Abu Dhabi and the UAE. The Linguistic Security Initiative developed by the Abu Dhabi Police College represents the emirate’s specific contribution to safeguarding Arabic’s future, whilst the recognition of the UAE Ministry of Education’s work demonstrates how national educational priorities align with global standards for Arabic language excellence. As the UAE continues to position itself as a knowledge economy, these initiatives affirm that cultural heritage and technological innovation are not opposing forces, but complementary pillars of national progress.
Over the decade, the Award has become a mirror reflecting the UAE’s commitment to preserving Arabic whilst embracing modernity. The recognition of initiatives from across the Arab world and beyond shows how Abu Dhabi’s leadership in this space has fostered a genuinely global conversation about a language’s future. This anniversary edition suggests not an ending, but the beginning of the next chapter in how Arabic evolves to meet the demands and possibilities of the twenty-first century.
