A Table That Speaks to the Heart of Inclusion

An ingenious circular training table featuring seven stations representing the Emirates will showcase how thoughtful design and shared purpose can transform rehabilitation and vocational development for People of Determination.

There is something quietly revolutionary about a table. This one is circular, which matters. Its seven stations represent each of the Emirates, arranged not hierarchically but in a shape that invites people to gather, to learn together, to participate as equals. It is a piece of furniture, yes, but also a philosophical statement: inclusion is not something added on, but woven into the very fabric of design.

The interactive training table will be presented at the International Conference on Occupational Health and Inclusion of People of Determination, running from 24th to 26th November. Developed by the Emirates Society for Occupational and Community Health in cooperation with Celestial Cocoon and in partnership with Zayed Authority for People of Determination, the table represents months of thoughtful consideration about how to create genuinely shared spaces for learning.

Its purpose is elegantly simple: to provide training and rehabilitation opportunities for blind People of Determination, their families, healthcare assistants and vocational technicians. Yet its design speaks volumes. The equipment accommodates wheelchair users. The open configuration symbolises not merely accessibility as a feature, but hospitality and genuine invitation as core principles. This is not a table that says ‘we have adapted this for you.’ It is a table that says ‘this belongs to all of us.’

Professor Dr. Nahyan Helal, President of the Emirates Association for Community and Occupational Health, describes the table’s essence in terms of cooperation, accessibility and equal participation. The language is precise. These are not nice additions to the conversation, but the very foundation upon which the initiative rests.

The UAE’s commitment to vocational and skills development has grown consistently, as seen in recent training initiatives across the nation. As we reported in our coverage of Samsung Innovation Campus, advanced training in fields from artificial intelligence to machine learning has become increasingly central to the country’s vision for its young people. Similarly, as reported when Apple recognised Coders HQ as an authorised training centre, the Emirates continue to invest in pathways that equip citizens with skills for the modern economy.

What distinguishes this table is its specific focus: training and rehabilitation that serves People of Determination, ensuring they too have access to the same quality of opportunity and the same dignity of participation. The circular form, the seven stations, the thoughtful accommodation of different needs, the symbolic openness of the design—these elements converge to create something that transcends functionality and becomes an expression of values.

What it means for Abu Dhabi

For Abu Dhabi and the Emirates, this initiative reinforces the leadership’s longstanding commitment to inclusive development. The table will be showcased at a major international conference, positioning the UAE as a place where theoretical commitment to inclusion has been transformed into practical innovation. It sends a clear message to the world about how the nation thinks about the role of People of Determination in society.

Locally, it offers a tangible model for institutions and organisations considering how to design training environments that genuinely serve everyone. The partnership between government entities, civil society organisations, and private sector innovators demonstrates the collaborative approach that has become characteristic of UAE initiatives, creating solutions that are both intellectually rigorous and deeply human.
