A Thousand Runners Unite for Arabia’s Elusive Cat

A Thousand Runners Unite for Arabia's Elusive Cat

Over 1,500 community members gathered at Yas Bay Waterfront for Run for Impact, a purpose-driven event that transformed fitness into conservation action, raising funds and awareness to protect the Arabian Sand Cat

On a morning bright with possibility, more than 1,500 runners assembled at Yas Bay Waterfront on Yas Island, their collective purpose woven into every stride. Run for Impact: Saving the Arabian Sand Cat was far more than a sporting endeavour; it represented a community united around a singular mission to safeguard one of the UAE’s most elusive and remarkable creatures.

Organised by Miral in collaboration with the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, Al Ain Zoo, EllisDon, and ZUBLIN Construction LLC, the event threaded together active, healthy living with meaningful environmental stewardship. Participants chose from three race distances—3km, 5km, and 10km—each suited to different ages and abilities, ensuring the run remained genuinely inclusive.

Beyond the exertion of running itself, the day unfolded with family-centred activities curated by Al Ain Zoo. Arabian Sand Cat-themed face painting, photographic moments and trivia challenges with prizes created an atmosphere where education and joy intertwined naturally. Children and adults alike engaged with the story of the Arabian Sand Cat, deepening their connection to the species they were helping to protect.

The funds raised through participant contributions will channel directly toward research and conservation initiatives dedicated to the Arabian Sand Cat, reflecting Miral’s commitment to delivering measurable environmental impact. This aligns with the Conservation pillar of IMPACT by Miral, the company’s sustainability framework aimed at creating genuine, quantifiable difference within Abu Dhabi’s ecosystems.

The Arabian Sand Cat, a creature perfectly adapted to desert extremes yet increasingly vulnerable, represents the kind of species whose survival depends on both scientific understanding and community commitment. Events like this one transform abstract conservation goals into something tangible: individuals running, families learning, and resources channelled toward actual protection.

The morning concluded with an awards ceremony that celebrated not merely speed, but the spirit of participation itself. It was a fitting reminder that conservation is not the work of specialists alone, but of communities choosing to act.

What it means for Abu Dhabi

The Run for Impact reflects Abu Dhabi’s growing commitment to wildlife preservation and biodiversity conservation. The Arabian Sand Cat, endemic to the region’s desert landscapes, symbolises the natural heritage that the emirate is working to protect for future generations. By mobilising 1,500 community members in active support of conservation science, the event strengthens the connection between residents and the ecological systems upon which their home depends.

This kind of civic participation in environmental stewardship deepens public understanding of why biodiversity matters. As the emirate continues to balance development with ecological responsibility, events that bind community action to conservation outcomes become increasingly vital. They create informed citizens who understand that protecting the Arabian Sand Cat is ultimately about preserving the desert ecosystem itself, a cornerstone of Abu Dhabi’s identity and future sustainability.
