A USD 20 million investment in the Turkistan Region signals the Fund's commitment to strengthening healthcare infrastructure and supporting sustainable development across its partner nations.
The Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Maternity and Children’s Hospital, now under construction in the Turkistan Region of Kazakhstan, represents a significant commitment to advancing maternal and child health services across Central Asia. With a built-up area of approximately 17,287 square metres and capacity for 80 beds, the facility will deliver specialised integrated healthcare in line with contemporary medical standards, reinforcing the region’s institutional capacity and expanding access to high-quality care.
The Abu Dhabi Fund for Development recently reviewed the project’s progress during a formal visit led by Mohamed Saif Al Suwaidi, Director-General of ADFD, and Dr. Mohammed Saeed Al Ariqi, UAE Ambassador to Kazakhstan. The delegation engaged with senior officials including Nuralkhan Kusherov, Governor of the Turkistan Region, to assess the hospital’s development trajectory. Construction commenced in April 2025, with the project scope encompassing the hospital building itself, comprehensive medical equipment installation, and full commissioning to support integrated healthcare delivery.
The investment reflects ADFD’s strategic positioning within the Fund’s broader mission to foster resilient healthcare systems worldwide. As we reported in our coverage of ADFD and the World Bank Group forging partnership to advance sustainable development, the Fund continues to prioritise partnerships that deliver lasting social and economic value across developing nations. The Kazakhstan project exemplifies this approach, combining essential infrastructure development with capacity-building initiatives that extend benefits to future generations.
Mohammed Saif Al Suwaidi emphasised the strategic importance of the investment: “Supporting resilient and inclusive healthcare systems remains a key priority for ADFD as it advances its mission to promote sustainable development worldwide. The Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Maternity and Children’s Hospital represents a strategic investment in human development, strengthening healthcare capacity and expanding access to high-quality, specialised care.”
The facility will strengthen the provision of maternal and child healthcare across the Turkistan Region, establishing a modern healthcare environment where expectant mothers and children can receive integrated services. Through strategic financing and development partnerships, ADFD continues to contribute to strengthening institutional capacity, advancing socio-economic development and delivering sustainable, long-term benefits for communities in partner countries.
What it means for Abu Dhabi
This project reinforces the UAE’s leadership in development finance and its commitment to fostering healthcare excellence beyond its borders. The hospital represents one of numerous ADFD investments that amplify the Emirate’s soft power and influence as a trusted development partner, whilst strengthening bilateral relationships with Central Asian nations.
For Abu Dhabi’s development sector, the initiative demonstrates the Fund’s strategic focus on essential infrastructure and social services, complementing the broader institutional commitment to sustainable development that characterises the Emirates’ approach to international engagement and partnership building across emerging economies.
