Following an triumphant inaugural hosting last May, the emirate has confirmed it will welcome Europe's elite basketball championship for a further two editions, cementing its status as a premier global sports destination.
The championship returns to Etihad Arena in May 2027 and again in 2029, a testament to the emirate’s emergence as a world-class host for elite international competition. The 2027 edition will unfold across 28 and 30 May, with the season’s most accomplished teams convening to compete for European club basketball’s most coveted title.
The announcement follows Abu Dhabi’s successful debut as tournament host in May 2025, when the event attracted global audiences and sold out within hours. That occasion saw Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul claim the championship before a capacity crowd of 12,000 at the arena on Yas Island, with millions more following the spectacle through Euroleague Basketball’s broadcast and digital platforms, establishing new audience and engagement records.
The weekend structure remains immaculately calibrated for maximum drama. Friday 28 May will host the semifinal matchups, with champions advancing to Sunday’s climactic Championship Game. Saturday’s programme features the adidas NextGen EuroLeague Final, a showcase for the most promising young talent in European basketball.
Saleh Mohamed Al Geziry, Director General for Tourism at DCT Abu Dhabi, described the return as reflective of the emirate’s enduring partnership with Euroleague Basketball and its growing prominence as a basketball destination within the region. He emphasised that events of this magnitude transcend sporting spectacle, generating investment, creating employment and supporting local enterprise whilst inspiring emerging players and fans across communities.
Dejan Bodiroga, President of Euroleague Basketball, praised Abu Dhabi’s commitment to hosting what he characterised as among the finest Final Fours in the league’s 26-year history, whilst Chus Bueno, Chief Executive of Euroleague Basketball, positioned the partnership as central to the organisation’s international expansion strategy, combining Europe’s traditional basketball markets with globally significant cities offering world-class facilities and passionate sporting communities.
The partnership represents a natural extension of the emirate’s growing momentum in basketball and reflects broader developments in the region. As we reported earlier this month, Europe’s basketball elite are converging on Abu Dhabi with increasing regularity, whilst the inaugural Euroleague Basketball SuperCup held in Abu Dhabi during September 2026 demonstrated the region’s appetite for elite competition. Dubai Basketball has equally distinguished itself on the continental stage, with the 2025-26 EuroLeague season featuring the region’s first participating team generating a cumulative television audience of 19.57 million viewers across the Middle East and North Africa.
Experience Abu Dhabi continues as a principal partner of Euroleague Basketball competitions and presenting partner of the EuroLeague Final Four, with destination branding integrated throughout the season across in-arena signage, broadcasts and team jerseys.
The arrangement aligns precisely with Abu Dhabi’s Tourism Strategy 2030, which aspires to increase visitor numbers by more than half between 2023 and 2030, generate 178,000 new jobs and expand the tourism and travel sector’s GDP contribution from approximately AED49 billion in 2023 to AED90 billion annually by 2030.
What it means for Abu Dhabi
The confirmation of the Final Four for two further editions underscores Abu Dhabi’s transformation into a destination of genuine continental significance for elite sport, drawing global audiences and generating substantial economic benefit. The 2025 event demonstrated the commercial and cultural appeal of hosting Europe’s championship basketball competition, establishing proof of concept that resonates with international sports organisations seeking venues and markets for marquee events.
For the emirate’s broader economic ambitions, events of this scale create tangible impact through tourism revenue, employment generation and investment attraction whilst cultivating a thriving sporting culture among residents. The convergence of European basketball’s finest competitors in Abu Dhabi signals the emirate’s readiness to host competitions of the highest international standard, positioning it competitively within the global calendar of major sporting occasions and reinforcing its appeal to both athletes and spectators across multiple continents.
