Abu Dhabi’s Water Platform receives Platinum recognition for global development impact

Abu Dhabi's Water Platform receives Platinum recognition for global development impact

The Abu Dhabi Fund for Development has been honoured at the Global ESG Awards for its US$2 billion initiative to expand access to safe water and strengthen water security across developing nations.

Water security stands at the intersection of human dignity, economic prosperity and environmental stewardship. It is this understanding that has animated the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development’s approach to development financing, and it is this commitment that has now been recognised with a Platinum Award at the Global ESG Awards in the Water category.

The honour reflects the launch of the Abu Dhabi Global Water Platform, a strategic initiative mobilising US$2 billion in financing between 2026 and 2030. The Fund contributes US$1 billion of this sum, with development partners providing the remainder. The Platform is designed to reach approximately 10 million people through projects that expand access to water, strengthen infrastructure and address the mounting water-related challenges facing developing economies.

Mohamed Saif Al Suwaidi, Director-General of ADFD, characterised the investment not merely as a financial commitment but as an affirmation of principle. “Water security is fundamental to sustainable development, economic resilience and the well-being of communities,” he observed. “Through the launch of our US$2 billion Water Platform, we are strengthening our commitment to working alongside partner countries and development partners to address water challenges through targeted financing and sustainable infrastructure.”

The Platform builds upon an established foundation. ADFD has allocated AED7.5 billion to more than 85 water-related projects across 30 countries, a testament to the Fund’s sustained engagement with this essential challenge. As we reported when ADFD advanced water security across Serbian agriculture, the Fund’s investments extend beyond water access alone. In Serbia, ADFD has invested approximately US$100 million in irrigation infrastructure that now serves 122,432 hectares of agricultural land through 17 irrigation canals spanning more than 500 kilometres. Such projects demonstrate how water security investments cascade through economies, supporting agricultural productivity and promoting the sustainable use of water resources.

Fatima Ateeq Al Mazrouei, Executive Director of the Abu Dhabi Global Water Platform, received the award during the official ceremony, acknowledging the collective effort required to advance water security at scale. The recognition arrives as ADFD continues to deepen its partnerships with international institutions, including a recent partnership with the World Bank Group to advance sustainable economic development.

What it means for Abu Dhabi

The Platinum Award underscores Abu Dhabi’s leadership in recognising water security as a cornerstone of global sustainable development. For the emirate, the recognition validates an approach that views development financing not as charity but as enlightened self-interest, building resilience and opportunity in partner nations that contribute to global stability and prosperity.

The Platform’s scale and ambition reflect Abu Dhabi’s sophisticated understanding of the interconnections between water security, food production, economic development and human wellbeing. By mobilising US$2 billion over five years and benefiting an estimated 10 million people, the initiative positions Abu Dhabi as a thoughtful custodian of development finance, one that recognises the complexity of water challenges and commits substantial resources to sustainable solutions.
