Al Ruwayyah transforms into a comprehensive winter destination as Dubai Municipality reimagines seasonal camping

Doubled capacity, new accommodation options and entrepreneurial opportunities signal a fresh chapter for the emirate's cherished desert retreat

The desert winter season holds a particular place in Dubai’s social fabric, and Al Ruwayyah has long served as the emirate’s canvas for family gatherings beneath star-scattered skies. This November, the landscape shifts considerably. Dubai Municipality has expanded the destination into something more multifaceted, introducing a season that reflects evolving community expectations around amenity, choice and economic opportunity.

The 2026–2027 winter camping season opens on 1st November, running through 30th April 2027, and will accommodate 600 camps, roughly double the provision of previous years. The expansion embraces diversity of experience. Alongside the traditional 400 square metre plots sits a reintroduction of double-sized camping grounds spanning 800 square metres, restoring an option that allows families to shape more expansive desert sanctuaries. Fifty dedicated caravan plots constitute a new provision, as do ten fully equipped camps available for daily rental, permitting visitors to experience Al Ruwayyah without the logistical undertaking of establishing their own encampment.

Beyond accommodation architecture, Dubai Municipality has designated ten spaces for winter events and gatherings, creating dedicated zones for family activities, community programmes and seasonal markets. This intentional weaving of social experience into the physical environment reflects the municipality’s broader commitment to transformative public infrastructure, which has seen over 107 community projects completed in recent months.

The season introduces a deliberate commercial dimension. Dubai Municipality has allocated investment opportunities for small and medium-sized enterprises operating within food and beverage, desert activities and recreational experiences. The intention is clear: to nurture local entrepreneurship while enriching the visitor experience through a carefully curated ecosystem of services. This echoes the municipality’s wider philosophy of public space development, one that increasingly partners with commercial entities to elevate community destinations.

Campers retain creative autonomy. Permit holders design and equip their camps according to individual vision, subject to approved regulations and temporary fencing installations. Dedicated spaces accommodate participating government entities, each establishing camps to suit their requirements. Registration and reservation flow through digital pathways, accessible via wintercamp.dm.gov.ae and the DubaiNow application, with seasonal bookings spanning three to six months, or separate options for caravans and daily rentals.

Bader Anwahi, CEO of the Public Facilities Agency at Dubai Municipality, positioned the season as foundational. The enhancements represent not a destination reached but a beginning, he noted, with future seasons envisioned to bring progressively refined facilities, services and experiences. The municipality’s ambition extends to strengthening community connections and ensuring that public destinations contribute durably to wellbeing and quality of life.

What it means for Abu Dhabi

Al Ruwayyah’s transformation carries resonance across the UAE. As Dubai expands and refines its approach to seasonal public spaces, the model speaks to a broader regional commitment toward creating integrated destinations that blend recreation, community and commerce. The emphasis on small and medium-sized enterprise participation reflects a philosophy increasingly adopted across the emirates: that public infrastructure development should nourish local entrepreneurship and economic diversification.

The season also signals evolving expectations around family leisure and outdoor experience. Doubling capacity, introducing caravan facilities and establishing dedicated event spaces suggests recognition that community preferences have matured and multiplied. For those across the region who value desert winters and family gathering, Al Ruwayyah’s reimagined identity as a comprehensive seasonal destination offers expanded possibilities for connection and experience.
