Citymapper integration transforms how travellers navigate the UAE’s expanding rail network

Citymapper integration transforms how travellers navigate the UAE's expanding rail network

A new partnership between Etihad Rail and the Citymapper app simplifies journey planning across the Emirates, combining rail services with metro, bus and on-demand transport into a single, seamless experience.

The journey from station to destination has just become considerably simpler. Etihad Rail has partnered with Citymapper, alongside its parent company Via and United Trans, to integrate the national passenger network into a unified mobility platform that reflects how people actually move through the UAE.

Since the official launch of passenger services on 30 September, trains have been carrying travellers across Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Al Dhaid and Fujairah. The partnership with Citymapper arrives at a moment when the network’s expansion makes end-to-end journey planning increasingly complex. The integration enables customers to view and compare journeys that weave together Etihad Rail services with metro, bus and on-demand transport options, eliminating the friction of planning across multiple platforms.

The approach preserves simplicity in its architecture. Customers continue to book and manage rail journeys through the Etihad Rail website and app, while Citymapper serves as the connective tissue, showing how passengers can reach stations and complete their journeys beyond the rail network itself. This division of labour creates clarity rather than duplication.

As Etihad Rail has demonstrated through partnerships with attractions across the Emirates, the philosophy guiding these collaborations centres on removing obstacles between passengers and their destinations. This latest partnership extends that principle across the entire transport ecosystem.

Adhraa Al Mansoori, Executive Director of Commercial and Support at Etihad Rail Mobility, articulated the reasoning behind this approach: “Giving customers greater choice and confidence is key to how we are shaping the passenger rail experience. As our network expands, we want customers to feel that planning a train journey is simple, clear and fits naturally to the way they already move across the UAE.”

The collaboration reflects a broader consensus among transport operators that modern mobility demands integration. Chris Snyder, Chief Operating Officer at Via, observed that “passengers increasingly expect transport networks to work together as a single experience.” By combining rail with other modes through a unified digital interface, the partnership reduces the cognitive burden of journey planning while simultaneously encouraging greater use of public transport.

Lionel Joseph, Head of Operations at United Trans, emphasised that “integrated mobility depends on strong collaboration between transport providers, operators and technology partners.” United Trans and Via have already established themselves across the Emirates through on-demand public transport services in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Ajman. The Citymapper integration builds on that foundation while the rail network itself expands.

The timing of this announcement underscores an important moment in the UAE’s transport infrastructure. As the railway prioritises safety and passenger responsibility, initiatives that improve accessibility and reduce journey complexity encourage more people to embrace rail as part of their daily movement through the Emirates.

What it means for Abu Dhabi

This partnership represents a tangible step towards the UAE’s vision of connected mobility and enhanced public transport adoption. For Abu Dhabi residents and visitors, it means less time spent navigating multiple apps and more confidence in planning journeys that extend beyond the railway itself. The integration acknowledges that modern travel rarely exists in isolation; journeys typically involve multiple transport modes, and seamless planning determines whether people choose public transport or alternatives.

As the passenger rail network continues its expansion, such partnerships become increasingly valuable. They reflect Abu Dhabi’s commitment to creating infrastructure that works intuitively for the people who use it, removing barriers to accessibility and encouraging a cultural shift towards shared mobility solutions that benefit the wider community.
