Design as cultural memory: Dubai's creative community gathers for its twelfth landmark festival

H.H. Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum inaugurates Dubai Design Week 2026, bringing together more than 50 countries to explore how design carries heritage forward while inspiring innovation

The twelfth edition of Dubai Design Week opened this week at Dubai Design District, drawing designers, architects and creative practitioners from across the globe to a festival that has grown into one of the region’s most vital gatherings of cultural and creative thought. H.H. Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairperson of Dubai Culture and Arts Authority, inaugurated the week-long programme, which runs until 8 November and spans architecture, interiors, furniture, product design and contemporary craft.

The festival presents a multidisciplinary vision of contemporary creative practice. More than 40 installations, exhibitions, commissions and activations sit alongside talks, workshops and public experiences that explore the layered relationship between design, cultural heritage and the way creative thinking responds to people’s evolving needs. Across the district, more than 20 installations by UAE-based, regional and international practices investigate architecture, sustainability and public space, while an extensive programme of hands-on workshops invites visitors of all ages to engage directly with the creative process.

Downtown Design, the region’s leading fair for contemporary design, presents more than 300 brands and designers from over 35 countries, showcasing new collections from international design houses alongside regional displays and specially curated presentations. The Forum, its talks programme, convenes more than 30 international and regional practitioners to discuss craftsmanship, material innovation and the trajectory of design thinking.

Central to this year’s programme is the UAE Designer Exhibition, supported by Dubai Culture and conceived by Emirati architect and designer AlZaina Lootah. Under the title ‘Inherited Futures,’ the exhibition brings together 30 UAE-based creatives who are reinterpreting the materials, rituals and craftsmanship that have shaped the Emirates’ creative identity, creating a bridge between traditional knowledge and contemporary practice. This conversation between past and present extends through Abwab, the festival’s commissioning programme supporting creative practitioners from across Asia and Africa. This year, five newly commissioned works explore how language, memory and cultural knowledge are communicated through design.

The Urban Commissions programme, an annual design competition for public spaces, presents this year’s winning proposal: ‘Three Gardens and a Room’ by NAO, the Dubai-based architecture practice founded by Reem Nassour. The installation combines planting, shade, filtered light and varied materials to create three interconnected gardens around a shared space, designed as a place for gathering, pause and human connection.

H.H. Sheikha Latifa emphasised the festival’s broader significance for the emirate’s cultural trajectory. As we reported in September, her vision centres on fostering trust and belonging within creative communities. Speaking at the inauguration, she noted that Dubai Design Week has strengthened the emirate’s design sector over successive editions, bringing together creative talent and industry leaders while creating opportunities for ideas to flourish. She remarked on the success of emerging designers, the collaborations the festival has inspired, and the creative ventures that have grown through visibility and opportunity. As Dubai’s creative economy expands, she committed to supporting new generations of designers and empowering them to develop innovative ideas and practical solutions that enrich people’s lives, create economic value and shape the city’s future.

The marketplace element brings the festival into direct conversation with makers and audiences. The Dubai Design Week Marketplace, on 7 and 8 November, gathers more than 80 independent makers, artisans and creative businesses from the UAE and the wider region, offering handmade ceramics, jewellery, fashion, homeware and lifestyle products. Al Jalila Cultural Centre for Children contributes the ‘Clay Vocabulary Exhibition,’ which combines workshops, a pottery marketplace and children’s displays featuring work from the Young Emirati Potters Programme, celebrating local ceramic practitioners and offering young artists opportunities to experiment and share their work.

What it means for Abu Dhabi

Dubai Design Week’s evolution into a festival of international stature reflects the broader cultural momentum across the Emirates. The gathering of creative talent from more than 50 countries underscores how the region’s design sector has matured into a destination for serious creative exchange, attracting international attention and fostering partnerships that extend beyond the week itself. For the UAE, the festival demonstrates the value of investing in cultural infrastructure and programmes that support emerging talent, particularly through initiatives such as the UAE Designer Exhibition and the Abwab commissioning programme.

The emphasis on heritage and cultural identity within contemporary practice speaks to a philosophy now central to creative discourse across the Emirates. By highlighting how new generations of designers are reinterpreting traditional materials and craftsmanship, the festival affirms that innovation need not abandon cultural memory. Rather, it can deepen it, creating work that responds to people’s present needs while honouring the knowledge and skills that have shaped Emirati creative identity. This approach strengthens the region’s soft power, positioning the UAE as a place where tradition and innovation coexist productively.
