Design as the engine of connection: Sheikha Latifa charts the future of Dubai's creative ecosystem

The Chairperson of Dubai Culture and Arts Authority visits Downtown Design 2026, emphasizing how the fair cultivates partnerships between designers, brands and industry, nurturing talent into thriving ventures that reach global markets.

The gallery space hums with possibility. Designers and manufacturers move between showcases, their conversations threading through the air like the materials and ideas on display. This is Downtown Design 2026, held under the patronage of H.H. Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, an anchor event within Dubai Design Week that gathers creative practitioners, established brands and industry professionals from across the region and beyond.

Sheikha Latifa’s visit underscores a fundamental truth about creative endeavour: ideas require the right ecosystem to flourish. She spoke of the fair as a vital commercial platform, one that bridges the gap between conception and realisation by connecting the makers with those who can help them scale and reach wider markets. The exhibition itself speaks to this philosophy through its curated presentations. The UAE Designer Exhibition, overseen by architect and designer AlZaina Lootah under the theme “Inherited Futures,” draws together 30 independent studios and designers exploring how traditional materials, rituals and methods of making inform contemporary practice. These presentations sit alongside international showcases, including works from Memphis Milano and a collaboration between Buccellati and British artist Luke Edward Hall titled “Aquae Mirabiles.” The Forum, a striking installation by Dubai-based practice Bone Studio, takes inspiration from Emirati domestic architecture and the narrow sikkas of traditional neighbourhoods, constructed from locally sourced, recycled and reusable materials.

Sheikha Latifa emphasised that supporting the design sector means attending to every phase of its development. “Ideas can grow into ventures of lasting value when the people behind them have opportunities to connect with the right partners and benefit from professional networks that support their growth,” she observed. This speaks to a wider vision: one where creative practice, production capability and commercial opportunity converge to create sustainable pathways for designers and creative entrepreneurs. As she has noted previously, trust is a city’s defining asset, and the relationships forged at such platforms rest on that foundation.

The fair represents more than transactional exchange. By bringing together talent at every stage of development with the institutions, manufacturers and markets that can support their growth, Downtown Design strengthens the connective tissue of Dubai’s design community. The presence of presentations such as Tanween by Tashkeel and the Athath Fellowship by MAKE Abu Dhabi signals a commitment to nurturing emerging voices alongside established practitioners. Sheikha Latifa articulated this as a deliberate strategy: building capabilities in design and creative practice, developing ventures and businesses rooted in the region that can ultimately reach international audiences, and positioning design itself as an instrument of innovation and sustainable economic growth.

What it means for Abu Dhabi

Dubai’s thriving design sector and the platforms that support it contribute to the UAE’s broader position as a creative hub in the region. The participation of Abu Dhabi-based institutions such as MAKE Abu Dhabi within Downtown Design reflects the collaborative spirit that defines creative development across the emirates, where talent, knowledge and opportunity flow between Dubai and Abu Dhabi and strengthen the region’s collective offering.

The investment in design infrastructure and professional development speaks to a philosophy that extends across the emirates: that creative entrepreneurship and innovation are drivers of economic diversification and human flourishing. By supporting designers and studios at every stage, from emerging practitioners to established businesses, the UAE creates pathways for its creative talent to build sustainable futures and contribute to the region’s reputation as a place where ideas become reality.
