A seasonal programme of coordinated environmental initiatives invites families, institutions and seniors to participate in expanding the emirate's green spaces and embedding horticultural practice into civic life.
The municipalauthorities of Dibba Al Hisn have inaugurated their annual Planting Week, a comprehensive programme designed to weave environmental stewardship into the fabric of community life. Organised under the evocative theme “A Generation Plants, A Generation Blossoms”, the initiative orchestrates a series of coordinated activities spanning family engagement, youth participation, institutional partnerships and dedicated care for older residents.
The week unfolds through a succession of carefully structured events. Family Day opens proceedings with presentations outlining the programme’s scope and previous achievements. Planting Day introduces the “My Family Plants” initiative, complemented by educational workshops conducted in partnership with Dibba Al Hisn Youth, Bee’ah and the Environment and Protected Areas Authority, all centred at the public park. A dedicated programme for senior citizens ensures seedlings are distributed directly to their homes through collaboration with the Department of Social Services, extending horticultural participation across generations.
The institutional dimension proves equally ambitious. An initiative titled “A Generation Plants, A Generation Blossoms” brings together government departments and community organisations to establish Washingtonia palms and seasonal flowers at Heritage Village and Beach Park. A parallel strand, “Institutions Plant, Land Flourishes”, encourages responsible planting practices across all municipal departments, embedding environmental consciousness within administrative structures.
Talib Al Yahyai, Director of Dibba Al Hisn Municipality, contextualised the programme within the broader strategic vision of the leadership. He described Tree Planting Week as an expression of commitment to environmental protection and sustainable development, emphasising the municipality’s determination to establish planting as an enduring community value rather than a seasonal gesture. The comprehensiveness of this year’s approach, he noted, deliberately spans families, children, young people, senior citizens and institutional actors, thereby addressing quality of life and the city’s aesthetic character.
Khadija Najeeb Al Nuaimi, Director of the Agriculture Department at Dibba Al Hisn Municipality, disclosed the intensity of preparation underlying the public programme. She described an integrated strategy combining awareness raising, practical fieldwork and formal community partnerships. Her remarks reaffirmed the department’s broader commitment to agricultural planning that promotes plant diversity, expands accessible green space, and sustains environmental responsibility across public facilities, government departments and domestic spaces.
What it means for Abu Dhabi
Dibba Al Hisn’s Planting Week represents a methodical approach to embedding environmental values into community practice. By engaging multiple age groups and institutional sectors simultaneously, the municipality reinforces the connection between individual action and collective environmental stewardship, reflecting broader aspirations across the emirates to integrate sustainability into urban and civic life.
The programme’s emphasis on accessibility and inclusion, from youth workshops to home delivery for senior citizens, demonstrates how environmental initiatives can strengthen social cohesion whilst advancing ecological goals. This model of coordinated municipal action, drawing upon partnerships with specialist organisations and leveraging public spaces, offers a template for how communities throughout the region might deepen their commitment to green infrastructure and long term environmental resilience.
