Abu Dhabi Ship Building explores integration of advanced CMD engines, extending the Group's defence manufacturing reach across continents
The synergies emerging from EDGE’s expanding global footprint are taking tangible form in the waters that define maritime capability. Abu Dhabi Ship Building, the regional leader in naval and commercial vessel design, construction and maintenance, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with CMD, the Italian designer of advanced propulsion systems, to explore the integration of CMD’s high-performance engines into ADSB’s vessels.
The agreement follows EDGE’s acquisition of a controlling stake in CMD in October 2026, when the Group announced its intention to develop maritime applications for the Italian company’s sophisticated propulsion technology. The MoU was signed at EDGE Europe’s office in Paris by David Massey, Chief Executive Officer of ADSB, and Giorgio Negri, Co-founder and Chief Commercial Officer of CMD, marking a formal commitment to collaborative innovation.
This partnership embodies the architecture of EDGE’s defence manufacturing ecosystem, a vertically integrated model that now extends from the UAE to Europe. The Group has systematically invested in building capabilities and developing technology across both regions, cultivating talent and establishing a platform where disparate specialisms converge. Abu Dhabi Ship Building has recently demonstrated its technological prowess through the delivery of advanced corvettes, signalling its capacity to absorb and implement cutting-edge systems within vessels of genuine operational complexity.
The integration of CMD’s engines into ADSB’s vessels represents more than a technical exercise. It speaks to a broader ambition within EDGE to orchestrate its various entities, each commanding expertise in distinct domains, into a coherent whole. By drawing on CMD’s propulsion expertise and ADSB’s shipbuilding mastery, the Group positions itself to deliver vessels equipped with the performance characteristics demanded by modern naval operations.
The collaboration underscores the strategic value EDGE perceives in consolidating European technical capability within its portfolio. EDGE Europe has become a substantive presence in the defence sector, not merely an offshore extension but an integral component of the Group’s innovation strategy.
What it means for Abu Dhabi
For Abu Dhabi, this partnership reinforces the emirate’s positioning as a hub for advanced maritime manufacturing and defence technology. Abu Dhabi Ship Building’s capacity to integrate world-class Italian propulsion systems into its vessels elevates the technical sophistication of vessels constructed in the emirate and strengthens its competitive standing in global naval markets. The arrangement also exemplifies how EDGE’s strategic acquisitions and partnerships translate into tangible capability development within Abu Dhabi’s industrial base.
The collaboration deepens the synergies within EDGE’s ecosystem, creating pathways for knowledge transfer and innovation between European technical expertise and Abu Dhabi’s manufacturing and operational capabilities. This cross-pollination of expertise supports the longer-term objective of establishing Abu Dhabi as a destination for advanced defence manufacturing, capable of designing, constructing and integrating systems at the highest technical levels.
