EDGE Completes CMD Acquisition, Establishing Advanced Propulsion Hub in Southern Italy

The Abu Dhabi defence and advanced technology conglomerate has secured a controlling stake in the Italian enginemaker, marking a significant expansion of its European industrial footprint and commitment to manufacturing excellence on the continent.
The completion of EDGE’s acquisition of CMD S.r.l. represents a carefully considered step into European manufacturing, one that brings together decades of Italian engineering precision with the resources and vision of Abu Dhabi’s industrial powerhouse. Signed in Rome, the transaction concludes the agreement first reached in May 2026 at CMD’s facility in Atella, nestled in the Basilicata region of Southern Italy, a landscape steeped in technical heritage and manufacturing tradition.
CMD, founded by the Negri family in 1989, has spent more than three and a half decades perfecting the art of piston engine design, prototyping and development. The company’s reputation rests on an uncompromising commitment to precision engineering across automotive, marine and aeronautical applications. For EDGE, the acquisition opens direct access to this accumulated expertise whilst positioning the Group to scale manufacturing capabilities and accelerate research and development across both conventional and next-generation propulsion systems.
The structure of the deal reflects a partnership built on continuity rather than wholesale transformation. CMD’s existing shareholders retain a significant minority stake, and the company’s leadership remains active in key management roles. Together, EDGE and CMD will now define an integration plan designed to maximise synergies whilst preserving the critical know-how that has defined the Italian company’s success.
Hamad Al Marar, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of EDGE, described the completion as a transition from agreement to delivery in building what he termed a highly capable European propulsion hub. The Group sees immediate applications for CMD’s engines in EDGE’s unmanned aerial systems, with large-volume orders already under discussion. The partnership also extends to maritime applications, with EDGE exploring opportunities alongside Abu Dhabi Ship Building, its naval shipbuilding entity, and other strategic partners. CMD will continue to serve its automotive clientele and develop this segment of its business.
Mariano Negri, Chief Executive Officer of CMD Group, characterised the partnership as a milestone for the region, its facilities and its workforce. The combination of CMD’s engineering expertise with EDGE’s industrial capacity creates the foundation for increased production, scaled operations and accelerated growth across all business segments, he noted. For EDGE, the acquisition exemplifies the model established by EDGE Europe, as we reported in our coverage of the FNC’s engagement in Gulf-European parliamentary dialogue. The Group builds in Europe, employs European talent and develops technology on European soil, working with established companies to strengthen national industrial bases rather than compete with them.
The acquisition also reflects a broader commitment to European collaboration. EDGE’s Memorandum of Understanding with the Basilicata Region, signed during its June 2026 visit to CMD, supports industrial collaboration, knowledge exchange and talent development. This alignment resonates with broader UAE efforts to forge deeper European connections, much as the Abu Dhabi Chamber’s strategic ties with Greek business institutions create direct pathways for Emirati business expansion. CMD now joins EDGE’s expanding portfolio of companies, joint ventures and strategic partnerships across Europe, together forming a manufacturing base designed to deliver capability at speed and scale for customers worldwide.
What it means for Abu Dhabi
For Abu Dhabi and the United Arab Emirates, the acquisition reinforces the Emirate’s position as a centre of advanced manufacturing and industrial capability with genuine reach across continents. EDGE’s European expansion demonstrates how Abu Dhabi’s industrial enterprises are building global competitiveness not through competition with established players but through strategic partnerships that strengthen local economies and talent bases. The propulsion systems developed through this partnership will serve multiple sectors—from unmanned systems to maritime applications—diversifying the economic value that flows from advanced engineering and innovation.
The investment also underscores Abu Dhabi’s commitment to knowledge exchange and talent development on a global scale. By investing in CMD’s facilities, people and technology, EDGE contributes to economic development in Southern Italy whilst building capacity that serves customers worldwide. This model of industrial partnership, grounded in respect for existing expertise and genuine commitment to growth, positions Abu Dhabi’s enterprises as partners of choice for European companies seeking to scale without losing their identity or heritage.
