Guggenheim Abu Dhabi opens bookings for its December debut

One of Abu Dhabi’s most significant cultural openings now has tickets to match its confirmed date. Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will welcome the public from Friday, 11 December 2026, with advance admission available through the museum’s official booking platform.

General admission is priced at AED 70. Entry will be complimentary for visitors under 18, students in the UAE, and UAE citizens and residents aged 60 or above. Reduced rates are also being offered to other eligible groups, making the opening of the capital’s new modern and contemporary art museum accessible to a broad community of residents and visitors.

A new cultural landmark for Saadiyat

Guggenheim Abu Dhabi occupies a prominent waterfront position within Saadiyat Cultural District. Developed by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi in collaboration with the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, the institution will join the Guggenheim’s international constellation alongside museums in New York, Venice and Bilbao.

Its arrival further expands a district already home to Louvre Abu Dhabi, teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi, Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi and Zayed National Museum. Together, these institutions give Saadiyat an unusually rich concentration of art, history, science and immersive cultural experiences, each approached through a distinct architectural and curatorial identity.

Frank Gehry’s architecture takes centre stage

The museum was designed by the late Frank Gehry, the Pritzker Architecture Prize-winning architect celebrated for buildings that treat structure, movement and material as expressive forms. In Abu Dhabi, his design responds both to the scale of contemporary art and to Saadiyat Island’s coastal environment.

The visitor journey will extend through 28 interior galleries connected by a central atrium, complemented by substantial outdoor exhibition areas. Ten sculptural cones rise through the composition, nine wrapped in stainless-steel mesh and one formed in onyx and glass. Reaching heights of up to 88 metres, the cones have been conceived to provide shade and encourage natural ventilation while giving the museum its distinctive silhouette.

The scale is considerable. Guggenheim Abu Dhabi encompasses a total built-up area of approximately 80,000 square metres, including 11,600 square metres of interior gallery space and 23,000 square metres dedicated to outdoor exhibitions. It is set to become the largest museum in the Guggenheim network, with spaces capable of accommodating everything from intimate works to ambitious installations and commissions.

A collection shaped by global connections

The museum has been developing its collection since 2009, with a focus on modern and contemporary art from the 1960s to the present. Its scope encompasses painting, sculpture, photography, installation, moving image and new media, bringing together artists, ideas and creative movements from multiple regions and generations.

Rather than presenting art history solely as a linear progression, the galleries will explore relationships across time and geography. Announced curatorial themes include abstraction, popular culture, land, language and storytelling, creating routes through the collection that encourage visitors to discover parallels between artistic practices from different parts of the world.

The museum’s outlook is deliberately international while remaining grounded in Abu Dhabi and its wider region. Particular attention will be given to perspectives from West Asia, North Africa and South Asia, placing those narratives within a global conversation and reflecting the UAE’s longstanding role as a meeting point for cultures.

More than an exhibition space

Guggenheim Abu Dhabi is being planned as a centre for learning, research and cultural exchange as well as a place to encounter art. Its programme will extend across the permanent collection, temporary exhibitions, newly commissioned works and public activities, supported by facilities for education, scholarship and conservation.

Full details of the inaugural exhibitions, commissions and opening programme have yet to be announced. What is already clear, however, is that the architecture will play an active role in every visit. The central atrium, interconnected galleries, shaded cones and outdoor display areas have been designed to offer varied pathways rather than a single prescribed route.

Standard admission costs AED 70. Visitors under 18 can enter free of charge, although children aged 12 and below must be accompanied by an adult. Complimentary admission is also available to students in the UAE and to UAE citizens and residents aged 60 or above, subject to the relevant eligibility requirements.

Additional concessions are available for selected groups. Visitors using a free or discounted category may be required to present valid identification or collect their ticket from the museum’s ticket desk. The opening on Friday, 11 December 2026 will mark a major new chapter for Saadiyat Cultural District and for Abu Dhabi’s engagement with modern and contemporary art.
