MD Anderson Cancer Centre Deepens Partnership with UAE on Blood Cancer Innovation and Medical Excellence

A landmark collaboration between the University of Texas's renowned cancer institute and Emirati physicians is reshaping the landscape of haematology, bringing advanced immunotherapies to patients while cultivating the next generation of medical specialists.

The First Emirates Hematology Forum, which opened in Abu Dhabi on 31st October, has become the backdrop for a significant deepening of ties between the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Centre and the UAE’s medical community. The collaboration speaks to a broader commitment within the Emirates to advance blood cancer treatment through access to innovative therapies and the rigorous training of clinical talent.

Dr. Swaminathan Iyer, Professor of Medicine in the Department of Lymphoma and Myeloma at MD Anderson Cancer Centre, has outlined the remarkable progress in immunotherapy now available to Emirati patients. Chimeric antigen receptor T-cell therapies, or CAR-T, represent one of the most consequential developments in recent oncology, offering targeted approaches to lymphoma, leukaemia and multiple myeloma. Seven CAR-T therapy products have gained approval, each targeting specific molecular markers including CD19, CD20, CD79, BCMA and GPRC5D. The therapeutic landscape continues to evolve, with new treatments emerging approximately every six months to a year.

The clinical outcomes speak eloquently to the power of these advances. Where conventional chemotherapy achieved response rates of around 60 to 70 percent, certain advanced immunotherapies now demonstrate efficacy rates of 95 to 100 percent in select patient populations. Beyond CAR-T treatments, research is progressing on bispecific and trispecific antibody therapies, which offer further refinement in the treatment armoury against blood cancers.

The partnership extends beyond patient care into the cultivation of medical expertise. Several UAE physicians have trained at MD Anderson Cancer Centre, whilst others have completed specialised training at leading institutions across the United States and United Kingdom before returning to contribute to patient care in the Emirates. This cycle of knowledge exchange continues to strengthen, with UAE-based medical teams and fellows receiving advanced training in the United States, thereby deepening clinical expertise in haematology across the region.

Dr. Iyer underscores the partnership’s broader significance: the imperative to render advanced treatments accessible to patients whilst adapting international medical advances to the specific needs of local healthcare systems. The relationship between MD Anderson’s Department of Leukemia and Lymphoma and medical professionals across the region has matured over several years, fostering professional relationships and sustaining knowledge exchange among specialists. Abu Dhabi’s growing prominence in haematology offers further opportunities to expand these collaborative efforts, enabling more physicians and trainees to benefit from specialised training and scientific exchange.

What it means for Abu Dhabi

This collaboration positions the Emirate at the forefront of blood cancer treatment innovation, ensuring that Emirati patients have access to the most advanced immunotherapies emerging in global oncology. The partnership underscores Abu Dhabi’s commitment to raising the standard of specialised medical care and ensuring that local healthcare professionals remain current with the latest international advances in a rapidly evolving field.

The emphasis on training and knowledge transfer speaks to a deeper investment in national medical talent. By enabling Emirati physicians to train at world-leading institutions and fostering ongoing scientific exchange, the collaboration strengthens the capability of local healthcare systems to deliver excellence in haematology. This cycle of development builds sustainable capacity within the UAE’s medical profession, enabling specialists to serve not only their own communities but potentially to contribute to medical advancement across the region.
