Science, Technology and Innovation Festival Returns to Al Ain with 4,700 Young Minds

The 8th National Science, Technology and Innovation Festival brings together students from across the UAE for three major competitions, scientific conferences and hands-on experiences in robotics, coding, renewable energy and artificial intelligence.

From 10 to 13 November, Al Ain becomes a gathering place for young scientific minds. The 8th National Science, Technology and Innovation Festival, held under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Hazza bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler’s Representative in Al Ain Region, will bring together students from kindergarten through university at ADNEC Centre Al Ain. More than 4,700 registrations across three major competitions signal the depth of talent and curiosity driving the next generation of UAE innovators.

The festival reflects the nation’s commitment to fostering a culture where science and innovation are woven into the educational experience. Hosted by the Ministry of Education and the Advanced Technology Research Council, it supports the objectives of UAE Innovates, observed throughout November each year. The Emirates Young Scientist Competition, the festival’s flagship offering, received 2,651 registrations from students in Grades 5 to 12, with 100 research projects selected for final showcase across four categories: Technology; Biological and Environmental Sciences; Chemical, Physical and Mathematical Sciences; and Behavioural and Social Sciences. Winners gain research experience and preparation for international scientific competitions, including the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair.

The Advanced Technology Pioneers competition, attracting 707 applications from university students and recent graduates, invites 210 participants across 58 teams to develop prototypes and simulations addressing real challenges set by the Department of Culture and Tourism Abu Dhabi, EDGE Group and Emirates Nuclear Energy Company. The Junior Innovators Challenge, with 1,402 entries from kindergarten to Grade 4 students, assesses creative thinking, problem-solving, communication, teamwork and adaptability through individual and team-based STEM challenges designed for each age group.

The festival programme extends far beyond competition. Eighty sessions and workshops span robotics, coding, renewable energy and the arts, while live science demonstrations and interactive artificial intelligence experiences bring learning to life. A Family Festival component welcomes participation from across the community, and activities combining cultural identity with sustainability underscore the UAE’s values. The festival also provides a platform for Emirati and emerging entrepreneurs to showcase their ideas and projects.

Sarah bint Yousef Al Amiri, Minister of Education, emphasised that nurturing future generations represents a national priority. She noted that education equips young people with the skills to ask questions, understand change and contribute to the creation and application of knowledge in service of people and society. The partnership with the Advanced Technology Research Council, she explained, reflects a commitment to identifying promising talents and providing students with meaningful opportunities to fulfil their potential. As highlighted in our earlier coverage of Ministry efforts to equip academics with artificial intelligence expertise, this collaborative approach strengthens the bridge between education and technological capability.

Faisal Abdulaziz Al Bannai, Adviser to the UAE President for Strategic Research and Advanced Technology Affairs and Secretary-General of the ATRC, underscored the importance of connecting young talent directly with scientific research and real-world industry challenges. Building an intelligence-driven economy, he noted, requires sustained investment in developing talent and building the capabilities needed to drive innovation. Through the festival, students prepare a generation capable of translating knowledge into impactful solutions, strengthening the UAE’s research ecosystem and advancing its technological capabilities.

A new initiative will launch on the festival’s sidelines: the Path 2 A2RL, linked to the Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League. This programme provides students with hands-on experiences in autonomous driving and embodied artificial intelligence, introducing advanced applications through practical challenges that combine scientific knowledge with engineering applications. This mirrors broader efforts to cultivate entrepreneurial talent across UAE institutions, connecting young people with pathways into practical innovation.

What it means for Abu Dhabi

The festival strengthens Abu Dhabi’s position as a hub for scientific and technological advancement. By engaging students from across the UAE in developing practical solutions to challenges set by leading UAE organisations, the event contributes to building the research and technological capabilities essential for the nation’s continued progress. For Abu Dhabi specifically, the involvement of the Department of Culture and Tourism Abu Dhabi, EDGE Group and Emirates Nuclear Energy Company in setting real-world challenges ensures that young minds are equipped with knowledge and experience directly applicable to the emirate’s key sectors and future needs.

The introduction of the Path 2 A2RL programme, connected to the Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League, brings cutting-edge autonomous technology within reach of students and creates tangible pathways for young talent to engage with advanced fields. For Abu Dhabi’s long-term development, fostering this generation’s capabilities in STEM, artificial intelligence and innovation directly supports the economic diversification and technological leadership that define the emirate’s vision for the future.
