The Centre marks the nation's pride by uniting educators and young learners in a celebration of UAE identity and values
The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Centre gathered on Flag Day to mark the occasion with forty five students from Al Falah Academy and members of the Centre’s own team, raising the UAE flag in an act that spoke to something deeper than ceremony. The day embodied the unity woven through Emirati society and the flag’s profound meaning as a symbol of sovereignty and national pride.
Flag Day brings together citizens and residents each year in shared recognition of what the nation represents. For the younger generation, these moments matter immensely. They learn, in the presence of their peers and mentors, what it means to belong to a country built on the vision of the Founding Fathers. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Centre recognised this significance and designed the event as part of its Jusoor programme, an initiative that deepens partnerships between the mosque and educational institutions across Abu Dhabi.
Dr. Yousif Al Obaidli, Director General of Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Centre, reflected on the occasion: “The flag of the United Arab Emirates symbolises a union whose foundations were laid by the Founding Father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, may God rest his soul, and his brothers, the Founding Fathers, and stands as a testament to the journey of a nation that continues to achieve success under its wise leadership. On Flag Day, we renew our pride in this legacy and our pledge to keep working and giving, to preserve the gains of the Union, and to contribute to the progress and prosperity of our country.”
Beyond the flag raising itself, the Centre’s cultural specialists offered the Al Falah Academy students a guided experience through the mosque’s architecture and landmarks. The tour illuminated the building’s embodiment of authentic Emirati values and explained the deeper significance of Flag Day in the hearts of all who live and work in the nation. The spirit of the day extended across the Centre’s network, with employees at Sheikh Khalifa Grand Mosque in Al Ain and Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Fujairah raising the flag in their own communities.
What it means for Abu Dhabi
Events such as this strengthen the bonds between cultural institutions and the young people who will carry forward the nation’s legacy. By involving students in ceremonies that celebrate national identity, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Centre reinforces the values of unity and continuity that have defined the emirate since its founding. The Jusoor programme demonstrates how education and cultural heritage can intersect, creating meaningful experiences that deepen young people’s connection to their community.
For Abu Dhabi, the celebration of Flag Day across multiple locations and institutions reflects the broader commitment to preserving and sharing the nation’s story. The Centre’s reach extends beyond Abu Dhabi’s borders, as evidenced by recent cultural initiatives in Switzerland, yet its heart remains rooted in local engagement and generational connection. These moments of shared pride ensure that the values embodied in the flag remain vivid and meaningful for generations to come.
