The intelligent energy operator: how Middle East leaders are redefining automation with purpose

Across the region's energy sector, a decisive majority of leaders are deepening their commitment to autonomous technologies, viewing them not as mechanical substitutes but as the thinking nervous system of resilient operations.

Three quarters of Middle East energy industry leaders have increased their investment in autonomous technologies over the past year, according to new research released by Schneider Electric. The findings reflect a region where autonomy has moved beyond technological novelty into strategic necessity, where 72 percent of respondents regard such systems as essential to operational resilience and uninterrupted production.

The distinction matters considerably. Autonomous operations, as those leading them understand, demand more than mechanical automation. They require intelligence that can perceive what is occurring across an operation, determine the appropriate response and translate insight into executable action. When energy, operations and intelligence function as a unified system, operators gain the capacity to see, decide and act with unprecedented speed.

Devan Pillay, President of Heavy Industries at Schneider Electric, observed that energy security has become economic security itself. “Organisations do not become resilient simply because they are autonomous,” he noted. “They become resilient when intelligence is connected to execution.” The Middle East, he suggested, has constructed precisely this capability as a long-term strategy, offering every other energy region a clear model to follow.

The tangible benefits are already measurable. Enhanced productivity stands as the achievement most frequently reported as already attained, cited by more than four in ten organisations. Improved workforce safety, enhanced environmental performance, and strengthened operational resilience and asset reliability follow closely. Only 2 percent of organisations have reduced spending on autonomous technologies over the past year, while all those using such systems, even in limited capacity, intend to increase investment over the coming twelve months.

The research also revealed that 72 percent of respondents believed clear regulations had accelerated autonomous technology adoption in their markets. Looking ahead, nearly half plan to direct the majority of their autonomous technology investment toward new projects rather than upgrades to existing infrastructure, with more than a quarter planning to divide capital roughly equally between the two approaches.

The timing of these findings arrives as the region prepares for the Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference (ADIPEC 2026), which convenes from 2nd to 5th November at ADNEC Centre. The convergence reflects the broader momentum within Middle East energy operations, where autonomy has transcended being merely fashionable to become foundational strategy.

What it means for Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi’s energy sector, integral to the emirate’s economic architecture, stands at the centre of this autonomous revolution. The research captures a region wide shift toward treating autonomy as long-term investment rather than short-term efficiency gain. For Abu Dhabi specifically, this signals both the sophistication of local leadership and the increasingly complex technological demands of maintaining global energy competitiveness.

The findings underscore why Abu Dhabi will host ADIPEC 2026, positioning the emirate as the forum where energy leaders exchange strategies for this precisely this intelligent, connected future. As the research demonstrates, the Middle East has built autonomous capability as deliberate strategy. Abu Dhabi’s role in advancing this vision reflects its commitment to leadership through innovation and operational excellence.
