The World’s Best in 3×3 Basketball Converge on Dubai for FIBA’s Premier Tournament

A landmark three-year partnership between Dubai and the International Basketball Federation launches this weekend with the inaugural World Tour stop, bringing elite streetball talent and a festival atmosphere to the waterfront.

The luminous court at Festival Bay in Dubai Festival City becomes the stage this weekend for a gathering of the planet’s finest half-court basketball players. The inaugural FIBA 3×3 World Tour Dubai 2026 tips off on Friday, 6 November, with fourteen world-class teams competing across two days of competition that melds the precision of elite sport with the energy of live music and festival culture.

The tournament marks the opening chapter of a three-year strategic partnership between the Dubai Sports Council and FIBA that extends through 2028, cementing the emirate’s position within the international circuit of premier basketball competitions. As we reported in our earlier coverage of the World Tour’s arrival in Dubai, the competition represents far more than a single weekend of athletic spectacle. It anchors a comprehensive developmental ecosystem designed to cultivate talent and broaden community participation across the sport.

At the heart of the Dubai Sports Council’s vision lies a commitment to legacy. Before the international teams took to the court, the champions of Team Amsterdam visited schools throughout Dubai, offering students direct engagement with some of the world’s finest players. The tournament’s centre court previously hosted the finals of the Dubai Schools Games, directly bridging grassroots scholastic competition with the elite international stage. This pathway reflects the framework established by the Dubai Sports Sector Strategic Plan 2033, which designates basketball among seventeen priority sports of global significance.

The developmental footprint extends across multiple initiatives. The Dubai Open Basketball Academies Tournament drew more than two thousand players, whilst the Dubai Schools Games engaged fifteen hundred male and female students. Beyond basketball, the ecosystem encompasses women’s athletics through the Sheikha Hind Women’s Sports Tournament and inclusive participation for People of Determination at the Nad Al Sheba Sports Tournament, which integrates 3×3 action with wheelchair basketball.

Ignacio Soriano, Head of Events and Partnerships at FIBA 3×3, recognised Dubai’s readiness to join the international circuit, noting the emirate’s facilities, passionate community and ambition. The World Tour’s grand finale occurs on Saturday, 7 November, culminating a weekend that showcases the dynamism of 3×3 basketball to both spectators and the wider basketball community across the United Arab Emirates.

What it means for Abu Dhabi

The three-year partnership between Dubai and FIBA reinforces the broader significance of international sporting investment across the Emirates. This commitment to elite competition, combined with the foundational work in schools and grassroots programmes, creates a pipeline of talent and engagement that benefits the nation’s basketball ecosystem as a whole. The UAE Basketball Association now has a platform through which domestic players, coaches and aspiring young athletes can observe and learn from the world’s elite, providing a catalyst for national growth.

The tournament exemplifies the strategic approach outlined in Dubai’s Sports Sector Strategic Plan 2033, with its emphasis on four foundational pillars—Community, Events, Clubs, and Talent. This framework strengthens the UAE’s global standing as a destination for major international sporting events, whilst simultaneously investing in the infrastructure and programmes necessary to develop homegrown excellence across the sport.
