Young Minds Converge on Al Ain as the World's Chess Elite Opens Championships

Continental chess presidents and international officials inaugurated the fourth FIDE World Junior Rapid & Blitz Championships in Al Ain this week, bringing together 150 emerging talents from 40 countries for a tournament that celebrates youth, discipline and intellectual excellence.

The opening day of the FIDE World Junior Rapid & Blitz Chess Championships in Al Ain witnessed the kind of sporting intensity that defines great international competition. Five players across the Open category and three in the Girls’ field each finished with perfect scores after three rapid rounds, setting the stage for a tournament that promises rigorous intellectual contest and the emergence of youthful chess talent on a global stage.

Held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Nahyan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, the championships are organised by Al Ain Chess & Mind Games Club in cooperation with FIDE and the UAE Chess Federation. The gathering brought together continental chess presidents from Africa, Asia and the Americas, alongside senior international officials, to officially open proceedings at Danat Al Ain Resort. Sheikh Sultan bin Khalifa bin Sultan bin Shakhbout Al Nahyan, President of the Asian Chess Federation and Chairman of Al Ain Chess & Mind Games Club, welcomed the participating delegations and highlighted how such competitions nurture young talent through friendship and shared values of concentration, discipline and sound decision-making.

The opening ceremony reflected the significance of this gathering on the international chess calendar. Attending were Bernard Wanjala, President of the African Chess Confederation; José Antonio Carrillo Pujol, President of the Confederation of Chess for the Americas; Javier Ochoa de Echagüen, FIDE Honorary Vice-President and President of the Spanish Chess Federation; and Hulkar Tohirjonova, President of FIDE’s Central Asian Zone. Özgür Solakoğlu, FIDE Technical Delegate, represented the world federation’s technical oversight of the event.

In the Open competition, Artem Uskov, India’s Pranav V and Praneeth Vuppala, Kazakhstan’s Satbek Akhmedinov, and Artiom Stribuk each secured three points from the opening three rounds. The Girls’ field saw Kazakhstan’s Zarina Nurgaliyeva, Russia’s Valeria Kleymenova and Uzbekistan’s Umida Omonova share the lead, with a closely grouped cohort of challengers poised just behind. Among Emirati players, Hamad Essa Al Blooshi and Husain Ali Alhammadi collected two points each in the Open, while Rouda Essa Alserkal scored 1½ points in the Girls’ category.

The nine-round rapid championships continue until 4 November, with blitz competitions scheduled for 5 and 6 November, closing on 7 November. Al Ain’s hosting of this fourth edition marks another milestone for the city’s world-class sporting infrastructure. The Al Ain Chess & Mind Games Club has previously organised the World Cities Chess Championship for the Sheikh Zayed Cup in 2012 and the World Youth Chess Championships in 2013, establishing itself as a custodian of chess excellence on the global stage. The club’s continental hosting record extends further, including the Asian Club Championships, Asian Youth Championships and Asian Individual Championships across multiple years, testament to the city’s commitment to nurturing international competition.

The timing of the championships aligns with Al Ain’s designation as the Arab Capital of Tourism for 2026, offering visiting delegations the opportunity to experience the city’s heritage, landmarks and renowned hospitality beyond the chessboard.

Al Ain’s role as host reflects the broader strategy of the Abu Dhabi Sports Council to support diverse sporting and intellectual pursuits that elevate the emirate’s profile globally. The championship’s presence in the city during its year as Arab Capital of Tourism offers a compelling narrative of intellectual vitality alongside cultural heritage, enriching the visitor experience and positioning Abu Dhabi as a destination where competition, friendship and shared values converge on an international stage.
