UAE Parliament Contributes to Global Dialogue on Middle East and UN Reform

The Federal National Council participates in significant Inter-Parliamentary Union committee meetings in Tanzania, advancing discussions on regional peace and strengthening UN effectiveness.

The Federal National Council has contributed meaningfully to discussions on pressing global challenges at the 153rd Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly, held in Arusha, Tanzania. The UAE Parliament was represented by Sarah Mohammed Falaknaz and Khalid Omar Al Kharji, members of the FNC’s IPU Parliamentary Group, who participated in two significant committee sessions.

In meetings of the Committee on Middle East Questions, delegates examined regional developments with particular focus on the prospects for peaceful coexistence and the humanitarian dimensions of current tensions. Ms Falaknaz emphasised the vital role that parliamentary diplomacy plays in fostering constructive dialogue and building trust between nations and peoples.

Drawing on the UAE’s commitment to constructive engagement, Ms Falaknaz advocated for a more inclusive approach to the committee’s work. She called for enhanced participation from experts and stakeholders, greater involvement of women in these critical discussions, and a practical orientation towards initiatives that can deliver measurable outcomes in the near term.

The Standing Committee on United Nations Affairs, which examined strategies to enhance the effectiveness of the UN system globally and at national level, also benefited from the UAE Parliament’s perspective. Mr Al Kharji highlighted the importance of robust institutional partnerships between UN country teams and national parliaments, emphasising that such collaboration ensures UN programmes align with each nation’s priorities and development objectives.

Mr Al Kharji advocated for regular evaluation of programmes and their outcomes, coupled with enhanced parliamentary oversight to promote accountability, transparency and the judicious use of development resources. He underscored that successful UN reform at country level requires not merely improved coordination amongst UN agencies, but also enduring partnerships with national parliaments that can exercise their legislative and supervisory responsibilities effectively.
