UAE Leads Global Initiative Connecting Food Innovation with Water Solutions

UAE Leads Global Initiative Connecting Food Innovation with Water Solutions

The Emirates is mobilising the food systems community ahead of December's UN Water Conference in Abu Dhabi, emphasising the critical interdependence between water security and agricultural production.

The United Arab Emirates is spearheading efforts to integrate the food systems community into global water discourse, recognising the profound connection between water availability and the future of food production. During Global Food Week UAE 2026, Abdulla Balalaa, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Energy and Sustainability, convened leading figures from government, industry, finance, and innovation at the PALT Conference, hosted by the Abu Dhabi Investment Office, to explore how water can shape the trajectory of food production and technological advancement.

The statistical reality underscoring these discussions is sobering: more than 95 per cent of food produced on land depends on freshwater resources, whilst agriculture accounts for approximately 70 per cent of global freshwater withdrawals. With the world’s population projected to reach 9.7 billion by 2050 and food demand continuing its upward trajectory, the challenge confronting the global community transcends mere production expansion. The imperative is to increase output whilst simultaneously enhancing resource efficiency across water usage and related inputs.

Mr Balalaa illuminated emerging opportunities at the convergence of food, technology, and investment, highlighting alternative proteins, fermentation technologies, cultivated foods, algae-based solutions, and next-generation food systems. These innovations possess considerable potential to diversify production methodologies and establish more resilient, resource-efficient agricultural frameworks.

Emphasising the transformative power of cross-sector collaboration, His Excellency articulated a compelling vision: increased food production cannot assume proportional increases in water availability. Instead, each water droplet must deliver enhanced value through more efficient irrigation practices, water-smart agriculture, drought-resistant crop varieties, water recycling systems, and sophisticated monitoring technologies. Food technologies that diminish resource intensity and innovative approaches to protein production represent critical dimensions of this diversified resilience strategy.

The UAE’s comprehensive approach reflects a foundational principle for December’s 2026 UN Water Conference: water functions as an economic enabler. Beyond agriculture and food production, water underpins energy generation, manufacturing, industrial processes, digital infrastructure development, urban systems, and broader economic expansion. Consequently, strengthening water resilience fundamentally strengthens the economic foundations upon which food systems and prosperity depend.

The Global Food Week engagements constitute integral preparations for the forthcoming UN Water Conference, scheduled for Abu Dhabi this December. The Emirates welcomes food producers, agribusinesses, investors, technology enterprises, researchers, innovators, and stakeholders across the food value chain to contribute expertise and scalable solutions to the global water dialogue. The conference will establish a dedicated platform enabling the food and agriculture communities to engage directly with broader water stakeholders, investigating how investment, technological innovation, and international partnerships can fortify resilience throughout value chains and enable increased food production with diminished water consumption.

The UAE invites global participants to register for the 2026 UN Water Conference through the official website, with complimentary registration available. Further information is available via social media channels @UNWaterConfUAE on X, LinkedIn, and Meta platforms.
