Tean: Levantine Cooking, Charcoal and Sea Air on Saadiyat Island

Levantine food with the sea in the background
Tean has one of those locations that could easily overwhelm the cooking: it sits beachside at Jumeirah Saadiyat Island, with open-air tables and the Gulf only a short distance away. The restaurant avoids becoming a view-with-mezze cliche by giving the kitchen a clear Levantine identity. Jumeirah describes traditional dishes built around succulent meats and hearty mezze, while the MICHELIN Guide expands the picture to Lebanese, Greek, Turkish and wider Middle Eastern influences designed for sharing. That regional breadth feels natural at the table because the organising ideas – bread, dips, smoke, spice and generous platters – are coherent.

The charcoal grill is the point to build around
Michelin’s inspectors specifically advise ordering from the charcoal grill and note the abundance of freshly baked breads. That is the right route through Tean. Mezze establishes the meal, but grilled meat or seafood gives it structure and the open kitchen adds a little theatre without turning dinner into a performance. Current diner feedback repeatedly returns to hummus, muhammara, lamb arayes and the sea view, with the strongest comments praising the combination of food and relaxed service rather than one elaborate signature dish. Jumeirah also offers a dedicated shisha menu, which extends the restaurant naturally into the later part of the evening.

Award-winning, but deliberately family-friendly
Tean appears in the current MICHELIN Guide Abu Dhabi selection and is marked family friendly, a useful description of how it actually feels. This is an award-recognised restaurant where sharing plates and children at the table do not seem out of place. Jumeirah currently lists opening daily from noon to 10:30pm, with smart-casual dress and all ages welcome; reservations are on +971 2 811 4342. For Simply Abu Dhabi, Tean’s strength is balance. The resort gives it a beautiful setting, Michelin validates the cooking, but neither turns the experience into something rigid. Go before sunset if possible, order broadly across the mezze, then make the charcoal grill the centrepiece while the terrace shifts from daylight into evening.
