TRENDS Conference Charts Visionary Path Towards Sustainable Regional Security and Strategic Partnership

The sixth annual TRENDS conference in Abu Dhabi has articulated a comprehensive framework for achieving enduring Middle Eastern stability through integrated security approaches that transcend conventional military paradigms.

The sixth annual TRENDS conference has delivered a series of far-reaching recommendations that chart an ambitious course towards sustainable regional security and strategic partnership. Presented in Abu Dhabi under the evocative theme ‘Sustainable Security: The Future of the Middle East After the War’, these recommendations represent a sophisticated intellectual framework for addressing the multifaceted challenges confronting the region.

Awad Al Breiki, Chief Researcher and Director General of TRENDS Global, delivered the concluding recommendations, which emphasise that genuine security extends far beyond traditional military considerations. The conference stressed the imperative of encompassing economic, food and digital security; fortifying societal resilience; enhancing early-warning and crisis-management mechanisms; and expanding cooperation between regional nations and their international partners.

The recommendations emerge from rigorous discussions spanning four pivotal domains: the evolution of deterrence and regional security frameworks; the information domain as a theatre of contemporary conflict; the reconfiguration of strategic partnerships and shifting geopolitical equilibria; and the protection of energy and trade flows amid intensifying geoeconomic competition.

A cornerstone principle articulated throughout the conference concerns the necessity for developing sophisticated early-warning mechanisms and intensifying intelligence coordination across regional boundaries. The recommendations advocate for an integrated regional security paradigm that seamlessly combines military capabilities, deterrence strategies, diplomatic engagement, confidence-building measures and crisis-management infrastructure, whilst reinforcing each nation’s primary responsibility for its own security and stability.

Regarding international partnerships, the conference emphasised the establishment of sustainable strategic relationships with the United States, Europe and other international counterparts, grounded in enduring shared interests and long-term commitments. Such partnerships transcend governmental cooperation to encompass universities, commercial enterprises, research institutions and civil society bodies, thereby ensuring institutional continuity amid political fluctuations.

The economic dimension received particular emphasis, with recommendations calling for economic resilience to occupy a central position within national security strategies. This encompasses protecting critical infrastructure including energy facilities, ports, maritime corridors, undersea cables and supply chains, alongside accelerating regional integration in transport, electricity interconnection, logistics and digital connectivity.

The conference highlighted the paramount importance of strengthening cybersecurity and information resilience by safeguarding critical digital infrastructure, countering information manipulation and ensuring that artificial intelligence operates within responsible governance frameworks grounded in rigorous ethical standards. Dr Saif Al Dhaheri, Director of the National Operations Center and Official Spokesperson of the UAE National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority, outlined the UAE’s national preparedness framework, which encompasses more than 40 national emergency plans, over six recovery plans, more than 200 operational plans and protocols, and over 40 specialised studies and research projects supporting proactive capabilities.

Think tanks emerged as pivotal institutional actors in this framework, recognised for their capacity to connect rigorous research with practical policymaking, developing evidence-based solutions that translate intellectual inquiry into actionable policies supporting sustainable regional frameworks for security, stability and prosperity.

The conference also launched TRENDS Research and Advisory’s publication, The Middle East After the War, which offers a perspicacious assessment of the transformative developments unfolding across the region, examining strategic implications, structural shifts in the political order and direct impacts upon global energy markets and maritime security.
